Credit cards?

So on two occasions I was questioned about using Daniel's credit card.  Which then means pulling out Daniel's Drivers License.  Which, as you might guess, is a little uncomfortable.

To add a new person to my card, I need to supply Name, Social Security Number and Date of Birth.  What happens if I apply using my real SSN and Birthday but with the name Denise?

I can't be the first one to want to do this.

Bank of America and Chase only required the name for the new card.   Both my daughter and my female Alter-Ego have credit cards with these companies.

I was able to apply for the extra cards online with no questions other than the name.

If you are not full-time, you could have one credit card in the old name and one with your new name.  Then use whichever is appropriate for the circumstances.  Or search for cash registers that have chip or tap readers, where you keep your credit card in your own hand, and no one needs to know about the name discrepancy.

Okay I decided - Screw it and called American Express.
Them: Customer service, how may I help you.
Me: I would like to get a new card added to my account
Them: Okay Mr. ..... what name would you like on the card?
Me: Denise .....
Them: Okay, Date of Birth
Me: Well here's the issue.  I'm transitioning, transgender so the birthday will be mine.
Them: Oh, let me check with my supervisor to see if this is okay.
<music on hold...about 60 seconds>
Them: Ok Mr. .... we can do that Is the spelling D.......
Them: Your new card should arrive in 7 to 10 days.

The other card I use is my debit card.  The issuer is MY EMPLOYER (I work for a bank) and I'm not out to everyone there yet.  I may have to do some inquiring around about this one.  When I called them I needed to go in and sign a signature card etc.  Maybe HR can assist.

I have a amazon credit card and a capital one credit card and both were easy for me to get the names updated though I had my name/gender marker legally changed so it's kind of a different situation but it does feel really nice seeing the proper name on all my cards and such ^_^

What do you you if you use the Denise card and they want to see an ID? I was thinking about doing this too but it could end up in a very awkward situation.

You can change your credit card so that it only shows the first initial of your first name.  That's what I did before I did my legal name change.

For example, if your legal name is "John Avery Smith", you can change your credit card to show "J A Smith".

Your records with the credit card company will still have your male legal name, but anyone accepting your credit card (or debit card) as payment will only see the initials.  If you're asked by the credit card issuer as to why you want to make this change, you could just say that it's for privacy reasons.

This way, you're not putting a fake name on an account - which could possibly lead to legal/financial problems later.

I plan on showing the "Daniel" drivers license and explain the situation.  Being exposed is not the end of the world to me.  It's just something that more and more I'm not going to want to do.  I also see a time where I'll have a Denise drivers license.  That day is approaching faster than I had expected (some time in 2017 I suspect.)

I was considering the same, but I really wanted to validate "Denise" and this was an easy way to do it.  It might solidify merchants perception.  Although that's not really important to me, it might become that way in the future.

I was going to ask if anyone knew if I could just get initials on cards.  My initials will be the same and not planning to change last name.  I've already started signing my name  T.J. instead of Tim. 

My parents have been calling me TJ for years now, though strange that they both do it more now (my dad pretty much exclusively) than when I was a kid, as they separated about 40 years ago.
