Hi everyone,

I have just rejoined Susan's Place after leaving for almost a year. I previously had jayne01 as my username. I wrote a brief story about myself in the introductions section.

I know it has probably been asked many times before. I am now at a place where I am ready to start hair removal on my face. Can anybody recommend any places in Sydney that do hair removal and are trans friendly? I have Mediterranean olive co,lured skin with dark hair, however more and more grey hairs are starting to appear. Would laser or electrolysis be better, and what sort of timeline can I expect to clear my face? (Months, years, ongoing treatment forever?)

AnonyMs, thanks for the link you sent me. The information about electrolysis was very helpful. I would like to learn a bit more about laser treatment. Is laser a permanent hair removal process or more of a long term thing that needs to be repeated after a period of time?

You are correct, I am unable to reply to your message until I get a minimum of 15 posts, that is why I am replying to you this way.

you probably can't do laser if you skin is dark.

I don't have dark skin, but it is not light either. I don't really know how to describe it. I have Mediterranean ancestry. I imagine a laser cli if would be able to make an assessment whether my skin would be suitable. Are there places that do both laser and electrolysis, or is it the kind of thing where they specialise in either one method or the other?

I'm doing electrolysis because my hair is too grey for laser, but it also is the one that is permanent while laser does need occasional touch ups. However electrolysis does take a while, i've been doing it for about three years now, although much of that has been quite intermittent.

I think you'll find that most electrolysists are trans friendly, i've seen a couple around Hornsby and they have both been fine.

Thanks Dana. I have read mixed reports about how "permanent" laser is. It does however seem that most people say that laser needs touching up from time to time.

I am in southwest Sydney, near Camden.

I just got an estimate to do electrolysis on my face. I was told $125/hr, and an estimated 100-120 hours required to clear the face. Does that sound right?  That $15,000 just for the face, what about the rest of the body? Is this something that could be claimed through Medicare or private health insurance? It has got me feeling quite depressed on a day where I am already feeling down. Does life provide any happiness or should I just go blow my head off now.....

The blocker should reduce the body hair and if it needs work, laser may still be a good option for it. As for how long it will take to clear your face, it will depend on how much facial hair you have. A corse beard while it looks bad, has fewer hairs per square inch and will clear faster than a beard with fine hair. Don't blow your head off because there are often solutions if you look around.

I was originally quoted 150 hrs at $150 per hour to remove all my facial hair with Electrolysis. So I went and had laser and that will end up removing over 60% of my Facial hair. At the moment total hair removal is sitting at about 60%. I have spent a number of hours with Electrolysis and am really making headway now whilst having facial injections for each session. So will need to spend somewhere around 50 hrs of Electrolysis so for me it will be more like 9k as my current Electrologist Charges $183 per hour

Make sure you are getting what you pay for...I was told I was having Laser by one place and it was simple IPL the equivalent of flashing your camera at  the hairs...maybe not quite, but you get the idea. Once I had a proper laser session again I recognised the difference, especially in the techniques used to administer, they are quite different. The results are hugely differentk. I spent $350 on the IPL and got some benefit and have now spent $750 on Laser but now my session cost be $60 as I need less time under the laser. My Tech doubts I will have enough to worry about, in 6 weeks but we have booked anyway. I am close to getting the maximum I can get but it has saved me a lot of Electrolysis pain.

As Dena says, the blockers will do great things for body hair, so don't bother with removal there until you have seen what they do. You still may need the odd hair or so done, but nothing to be worried about.
Unfortunately the 100-120 hours sounds about right to get the face clear, although this is spread over quite a period so at least you don't need to pay it all at once. You also may want to shop around to see if you can get a better price; I'm only paying $90 an hour so there are cheaper people around.
