For me it involved going to the book store and buying a 5.97x10^47 of the greatest baby names ever book. Since my girlfriend and I both went we had an awkward "OOOOH CONGRATULATIONS!" followed by "Uhh, yeah thanks!" conversation with the cashier lady. (we had a good laugh about that later)
That book taught me one thing: there are some editors convinced that some of the most screwed up names imaginable are acceptable baby names. Anyway...
We dug through the book and started writing ones down that sounded good (she's a nurse and I'm a science type, so we like lists) I ditched the ones with an S in them since I have a lisp and hate showcasing it, Estelle being in that group. Then we scratched off the ones that sounded a bit pretentious or a little too exotic, Colette was one of those. We got down to Karina, Colleen, Claire, and Jade. I decide that I didn't want to be named after a rock, so Jade was out. After that we just started trying names out in conversation over the course of a few days and Colleen won out.
