Anyone had any issues changing their name on Facebook? I unfortuntely have a very fake sounding last name so everytime I try to update it I keep getting told it isn't authentic and I must provide ID (which I don't have yet). Not really sure what to do other than hope I can get my papers through soon.

hi jagfel!

I just changed my Facebook about a month ago, (first name only, kept my same last name) and had no problems at all.  It was pretty simple and straightforward, Edward to Erin.  If your name is less common then that also may have raised some sort of flag.  I had also changed my gender marker on there about a year earlier, even though it wasn't made public.  (It did post things like "Edward changed HER profile picture."). So if you're changing from one heavily-gendered name to another, it might be helpful to change your gender marker first.  That's totally just a guess, though.  Good luck both on the Facebook change and in getting your ID docs.

I do use a fake name and always have... very obviously fake names. I wonder why they're singling you out? Unless your last name has like one or two characters only I can't see why there's a problem.

As far as I know my gender marker is set to they/them so as to not raise flags for people who don't know me well enough so I don't think that's it but I'll have to double check.

My last name is an animal and I've always had people doing double takes when they see my name regardless. But saying that, I supplied ID proving my last name is legit and they still won't change it.

Not really sure what to do because I'm currently not in a position where I can smoothly legally change my name thanks to my work/financial situations.

Just make a new account and re-add all your friends?

No way I'd be showing Facebook all my ID for a name change.

I must have had 7 or 8 accounts in my time, it's no big deal to get another.

^ I second that (the whole not showing your ID thing, especially).
One of my friends has his middle name set to 'TheLastBestHope'. They really shouldn't be hassling you.

I just made a new account when I changed my name. I originally was only adding people that knew I was trans but now there are a few people on it that I met in college. It works out good because the one in my old name I literally only talk to one person that was on my friends list.
