While not ideal, a six month delay is not really so much.  It is a far cry from the reinstatement of the outright ban that many conservative groups have been whining for.  I'm sure we will soon be hearing from all the lily livered chickenhawks that infest those groups how our service is such a detriment to national security and an affront to god.  Oh my, the sky is falling, LOL LOL LOL.

Deborah, you know that the military is all about the hurry up and wait. New transgender recruits are gonna spend six months in line anyway!

I work in and around the military every day.  This is a non topic.  It is rarely, if ever, spoken of.  LBGT, politics, and even religion are mostly non topics.  The military is kind of a different society than what exists outside (an understatement).  We all get along.  Those that can't get along get booted out.  People snivel and complain all the time about how one thing or another sucks but normally not about these topics.  It's usually about stuff that actually matters like how much it's sucks to be eating frozen MRE Chicken a'la King or how much it sucks to be out in the rain all night at 40 degrees.

However this is finally implemented, some will like it and some will not.  It doesn't matter.  Whatever is decided will work.  So in this case I don't believe there is some widespread conspiracy in the military to try and turn all of this off.  Rather I think that like everything else the people in charge are trying to plan this out to the smallest detail to make sure it works without any unforeseen problems.  It may appear to be an overly conservative way of implementing the changes but it's simply the way everything is done.  That's one of the reasons we nearly always win.

This all reminds me of back in the 1970s right after Vietnam when racism was a huge issue in the military.  My Father was in the Air Force and he told me something I'll never forget.  He had addressed his Airmen on the issue and told them (I paraphrase) "I don't see any of you as white or any others as black.  Everyone here is blue."  This is the same thing - as long as the politicians and activists simply leave it be.

Please note that the 6 month delay only applies to new recruits. It does not apply to current or former members of the military.

We have a saying in the Army, " When the troops stop complaining, watch out. " Field conditions are tough. We accept that. As long as the troops feel that they can freely express themselves, they feel that there is hope to make things better. When the situation is hopeless, those in charge take the responsibility for the mess.

My sentiments exactly. How can anyone who has never been in the military possibly know what it is like to serve. I do not respect chicken hawks. Who needs them?

One hopes for the best.  At least there is a statement on the record that this does not prejudice the status of transgender folks already in uniform.

The Republicans are threatening to defund the military unless it bans transgender people entirely.  Their rhetoric is escalating also with a member of Congress calling us a domestic threat.

True.  So, who's going to blink first?  Will it be the DoD or will it be Congress?

I think Congress, them politicians are such weather vanes, and I hope the military is slow and steady and would refuse to cave in easily.
