A lot of the information online on recovery, however, is geared toward women, mostly older women, obviously. But it's not helpful to me, because I'm a younger guy, still with a steady level of hormones, etc. I'm wondering how long it'll take until I can start lifting heavy weights regularly, running, cycling, etc.

Prior to surgery, I was lifting weights 6x a week and cycling/running. I'm now 2 weeks post-op from my hysto. My doctor said I can slowly start upping my cardio, but to wait a full 6 weeks to lift.

Is there anyone else here who has had a hysterectomy and can give me some advice on working out afterward? I really don't want to get back to it too soon and delay my recovery, but I also don't want to wait longer than I need to.

Hi. I was a heavy lifter when I had my hysto. They mainly want you to not life anything ober 10 lbs until 4-6 weeks out. This is due to your incisions healing and internal healing. LISTEN TO THE DOCTORS! I pushes it too early and ended up with peach sized blood clots passing in my toilet. No pain or anything at all but the blood pooled over time and casually dropped out as I peed. As with top at the very least you could stretch your incisions and put too much stress on them. Its tough but be patient.

First, obviously listen to whatever limitations your doctor puts you on. My doctor cleared me for full activity at 3 weeks post op, so mine was a little different.

I started out just taking long walks (about 5 miles total). After a few days of that, I would do the same routes but I'd do jogging/walking intervals. It took about 6 weeks for me to feel 100% fine running the whole time.

As far as strength training goes, I actively avoided core workouts for about 2 months. Didn't want to do anything to really stress that area. Still did upper body and legs, though I did restart at 50% of the weight I usually lift just in case.

I think somewhere in the 6-8 weeks post-op period I was back to full activity at the same levels that I was at pre-op.
