I'm 34 years old and only recently started medically transitioning.  I still haven't come out to my mom- they live a couple states away.  My mom and I are very close - talk every day on the phone.  Do any of you have any advice or stories on how you came out to your family?  Anything you'd do differently, looking back?

Ari,

Welcome to the site.

Tough subject. We do have some wiki links here on this. Some is specific, some is general and there are a few letters as examples.

I am going to move this to the category called Coming Out of the Closet. If you get a chance you could go to the introductions category and leave a post. So we can all get to know you better.

Hi, Ari

Welcome to Susan's

When I came out to my wife, I realized that it was something that I just had to do.  It took me a long time to work up the courage, but eventually, I just had to do it, no matter how hard it was.  I made sure that I was ready for her most obvious questions:  I had no desire to leave her, I was leaning towards full transition, possibly including surgery, and the next step was to talk to a therapist.

It went well, but of course, that is not always the case.  Think ahead about what you will do if it doesn't.  Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

Good luck!
