I'm in the unenvious position of heading to Thailand with male ID. I have no choice as I'm in a State that will not issue any State ID as a gender that doesn't match your genital presentation. Given those circumstances,  my only choice is to head over, have my surgery and head home with the letter they apparently give you before you leave.  I have had FFS and lost 40 pounds since my license picture was taken, so I plan on getting a new license in the male identity with a new picture that more reflects what I look like now. So thats my plan. I hope to get back in one piece and then head to the Court for new identity documents across the board as well as a Birth Certificate change. Anyone that see's holes in my plan, please give me some advice cuz' I just want to get this done with the least amount of airport drama I can muster. It really is inconvenient to live in aplace that's so terribly intolerant, but as I own a home here, my options are unfortunately rather limited.

Thanks again for the info, all.  Good stuff that has helped put me a bit more at ease as far as marriage documents-and my wife as well.  I will be going to Thailand for srs in Feb if everything works out.  I  look pretty much like the picture on my male passport and license, except for a moustache that no longer exists, so I hope to just go, get fixed and come back without any issues.  I'll have paperwork to hopefully explain in case I get scanned and arouse suspicion, also I may look a bit booby, but now I'm trying to pass as a male!  Boy, how topsy turvey can this get :-) ?  Toni

You can change the gender on your passport before having surgery. It only requires a letter from your doctor stating you are undergoing transition.

I had heard that the State Dept. had slowed requests down to a standstill and it would be nearly impossible to get that done since the new Administration? Is that incorrect? If so, how long would it take to process?

Hi Toni! Looks like wee in the same position! Where are you having surgery? I'm at PAI and will be on the table  Feb. 9th. We may be there at the same time! I'm sorry too. I have not talked to anyone that has applied recently. I had my name and gender marker changed about 18 months ago. My new passport came back in 4 weeks.

My passport was really fast in 2014 too, although I wouldn't be totally shocked if they are dragging there feet at this point.  The policy itself hasn't changed...yet.

Hi Jessica.  No worries, glad you chimed in.  I've been talking with Som (Dr. Chettawut, is that who you're seeing?).  We had been talking about Feb. 9, but it was pushing things a bit as I'm moving my son from Texas to Washington state over Christmas and so I think we settled on the 12th of Feb,  At any rate, it seems we'll be in Thailand about the same time if this all works out.  Let me know if Dr. Chet is your guy too, or if you'll be in Bangkok and we'll stay in touch, maybe even visit even if you're not with Dr. Chet when I  start moving about.  Feel free to PM me to keep contact as this develops (is that info available here?  If not just ask and I'll post, nothing to hide, or if you have a profile, I'll look there.  I'm a bit new here.)  .  Wonderful to hear any time someone's dreams come true!

No problem with the acceptance officer at the post office, and the passport came in 10 days!  No rush payment or anything. I was shocked.

Just an FYI. I just received a new birth certificate from Missouri. I live in Illinois so it required a court order from a judge in Illinois, but once I had that and sent all of the paper work to Missouri I got the amended birth certificate back in 8 weeks.
