Hi everyone!

I'm new here and this is my first post, so I hope I'm doing this right. I do not identify as transgender but I am a woman who enjoys wearing men's clothing because of its comfort and better fit to my body proportions. And I need some guidance about underwear.

I swapped panties for male boxer briefs years ago and will Never go back! But then there's that time of the month. For that, I have some short-leg trunk-style men's no-fly underwear. They work kinda better than my everyday shorts to fit a sanitary pad, but it's not great. I end up wearing a pair of compression leggings on top because I like the snug feel and it also helps to hold everything in place and not have to worry about pads slipping, leaking, etc.

But I don't always feel like wearing the leggings to sleep, or when I have to get dressed to go out (ie, wear pants that would be too tight or hot with the leggings underneath). So I got curious if wearing men's briefs would work? Will they accommodate wearing a pad with wraparound wings, and will they hold it in place without having to wear a snug layer on top? Will I be able to sleep in just underwear without worrying about overnight leaks?

Also, what brands would you recommend, for comfort, sizing, value, etc? It can be hard to find suitably small sizes in men's underwear (I take a small: 30-inch waist, 38-inch hip, what I would call "curvy petite"). Interested in Hanes because I love their Cool X-temp undershirts but have never tried their underwear so would appreciate some personal experience.

Many thanks in advance!

Welcome aboard Lotus!  Just stopping in mostly to say hi, since I don't really have a specific answer to your question.  My boxers just are ones I found at a local grocery store sooo yeah.  Oh, they are hanes though. Good thing the brand is right on the boxers band LOL.  I don't remember what type of Hanes boxers these are off the top of my head since there were like 50 different types (okay maybe not that many but shhh) But I will say, these ones are definitely not designed for a curvy body at all. I have almost no hips or butt whatsoever and these are like, 'Hey there. Nice hips/butt.'

Of course you're looking for something for period days, so maybe the briefs are better in that aspect, not sure.

Welcome Lotus. I have no experience of periods because of hysterectomy 8 years ago.

I just wear what is cheap and comfortable. I'm in Sweden, so brands won't do you no good.

Just wanted to say hello and welcome. :)

Hi Lotus,

I'm Laurie, mtf. Welcome to Susan's Place (Hug)  Come on in and make your self at home. As an ex male underwear wearer and a unknown to me at the time transgender crossdresser, I have a bit of experience with underwear. lol usually in the opposite direction that you are pursuing. But be that as it may... the normal men's briefs would probably not work for your purposes due to the fact they have plenty of room to accommodate male attributes and they have a wide gusset. For a snugger fit you might look into men's bikini style briefs. These briefs are snugger in the crotch and are stretchy to hold the male part in better. Though the gusset is still wider than panties have I think they are narrower than regular men's briefs. They are also come in colors.  They just might accommodate a winged pad and hold it in place.
Because you are new here. perhaps I can even get you to hop on over to the Introductions Thread and  create a post to tell us a little bit more about yourself so we can get to know you a little better and greet you properly.

Also I'll add some links and information below that can help you get more out of our site. Please take time to become familiar with them especially the RED one as we are always getting questions that are answered there.

Hi Rowena_Ellenweorc, MeTonie & Laurie! Thanks so much for the replies and the warm welcomes. I browsed around a couple of the other boards before registering and already have learned so much. I will pop on to the Introductions page and am looking forward to hopefully chipping in where I can   :)

Laurie, that is very helpful insight! I know nothing about male underwear outside of my beloved boxer briefs. In a pinch when I really needed to I have tried pads inside of them, but with walking around and such the wings just get bunched up into the leg fabric which causes the pad to move around. Might boys' briefs work better? Depending on the cut, I can easily fit a Boys size 16-18 pants/jeans. Would feel very weird shopping in the boys underwear section at a store though!

Lotus,

All have have to say about feeling funny shopping in the boys section is that it CANNOT fee any stranger than when I thought I was a cross dresser (for decades mind you) and my shopping in the women's departments. Even going into Victoria's Secret each year to buy hand cream, lotion and body wash for my mom, sister and a couple women friends each Christmas was terribly embarrassing for me. And those were GIFTS! But really you will learn the sales people do not care. They are there to do a job not stop you from buying things.

As for size, that may be a bit of trial and error but you will figure it out. You obviously want a snug fit but also a fit that is confortable yet still does the job. Happy clothes shopping.

The Flying Lemur

Hey there!  There's a company called Pyramid Seven that makes boxer briefs for people who have periods:

(On closer look it appears they're temporarily sold out, but they say they'll have more soon.)

You can also make something just like that yourself at home for much cheaper than what the sell them for. Just cut out the gusset of some briefs and sew them into your boxer briefs. I do the same with my boxers.

SOLVED: (in case this helps someone else)

I took Laurie's advice and got small size men's bikini briefs; the gusset is only slightly wider than a panty and is actually smaller than the "period shorts" I currently use. Then I put a short-leg compression short (like the kind used for working out) on top, and it works great for holding everything in place and also that snug "hug" feeling I like. Since the material on both is so thin and lightweight, it feels great under pants without being bulky or hot. Thanks Laurie!!!

OMG that's awesome! People are so ingenious. I hope they get back in stock soon so I can try them. I'd only need a few pairs for That Week so building a collection over time wouldn't be terribly expensive--- comfort and utility are worth the investment!

This is also a great idea. Unfortunately I have Zero talent for sewing lol, and I would feel strange having someone else do it... but maybe someday I will, lol.

Thanks everyone for the ideas!

Hi! Before I started hormones and still had my cycle, I used mens briefs during that time and found them perfect. I think they're more comfortable than panties anyways since they're a more substantial fabric. The pads with wings fit them, sometimes you have to kind of find the right way to put the pad on though because some are wider in the crotch than the pad. I usually folded down the wings in a way that compressed the crotch together to fit.

Hanes are actually my least favourite briefs. I have the standard Hanes and I find them overly stretchy. By the end of the day they are sagging and way too loose, there's a huge amount of stretch in the butt, and I even have a big butt anyways so that's really something. I'm not sure if they have other lines that fit better, but my step dad has also complained about Hanes as a whole for the same reasons. If you're looking for briefs in the same price range, fruit of the loom is decent and you can usually get those in colors if you like that. The waistband can be a bit.. itchy so make sure you get the right size or even a size up. I'd suggest low rise since you don't have any -package- taking up space down there, but either low or normal would still work. My all time favourite briefs right now are Calvin Klein. They're softer than the fruit of the loom and I can get a big pack of shades of blue (my favourite colour). It's a struggle to find more fashionable briefs, I guess there isn't a big demand. I'm interested to try the American Eagle briefs as well because their boxer briefs are super soft and they come in a lot of colors, but haven't had the money.

Hi CursedFireDean, thank you for that very helpful input.

I suppose it depends on the brand of briefs; some worked for me, others didn't. The best fit I found was Jockey low-rise bikini briefs. They are super soft, didn't ride up, and fit a pad pretty well (I did have to "compress" the sides of the crotch a little bit with the wings, but not horribly so and not any worse than the shorts I was using before).

The only thing I liked about the Hanes is the FreshIQ X-temp Whatever-else-it's-called lol. The undershirts feel so soft and cooling I forget I even have them on. Even the women's hipster shorts I tried in that brand felt good, which is really hard to find in women's underwear.

I have heard good things about Calvin Klein also but have yet to try them. Great tip on the American Eagle brand, I had actually forgotten they had underwear!

The everyday boxers I currently wear are Kirkland Signature from Costco. They are very sturdy fabric, but still soft. The waistband can be a little bit tight if you have a poochy belly like I do, but it's not too bad and sizing one up should fix that. They are long leg, so not the best for a pad, but I have been very happy with them for everyday wear.

I like Men's Buck Naked Performance Briefs from Duluth Trading.  They are breathable, not cotton.
