Welome to Susan's Place. Catheters depend on the duration of the surgery and your ability to move around after surgery. I had voice surgery which is a relatively quick procedure and I could get out of bed as soon as I was fully awake. I didn't get a catheter and I am sure of it because I woke with a really full bladder and I hadn't drank anything for almost 12 hours. Some FFS surgeries run up to 12 hours and for that, a catheter would be required. It would be best to ask your surgeon because without more knowledge about the procedures it's difficult to know the answer.

+1 on Dena's comments. Also, if you are taking Spironolactone as an anti-androgen, it will also act like a diuretic and you will have to empty your bladder some time during a long surgery. Having a urinary catheter inserted in your bladder only hurts when the tip passes by your prostate gland. Been there, done that. Ouch!  :-X
