Are at home IPL devices truly counter productive?

So I keep looking at this deal on groupon for a Remington ILight Quartz for $289. After browsing other prices for hair removal, this is less than one professional session for a machine that is supposed to last logistically forever, making this seemingly a no brainer on cost even if it is only slightly effective (and also that it seems as though getting the ball rolling with this even if wind up with professional treatment at some point would only make that easier?).

Yet in these forums I've seen a few references to IPL hindering professional hair removal down the line, making the deal significantly less enticing as it would only cause eventual heart ache for potentially minor gratification now. Is this true though? I can't find any indication of this elsewhere, and a lot of random people seem to swear by these little machines for hair removal. Are there any studies or data on this?

(Glossing over the reduction vs removal issue since not comparing it to electro, just professional laser.)

Oh, also, note that I mean for body, not for face. The cost of covering chest, back, and arms is just monstrous.
