Kenwood vs kitchen aide mixer.

Hi everyone. So I'm looking for a new mixer. The one we have is a sunbeam that someone gave my parents when they got married. It's really sad and not suitable for the stuff I want a mixer to do. I was planning to get a kitchen aide but then Tristan's mom showed me her Kenwood. I was impressed with it. She said it was wonderful and that they last forever. She said she had one in Australia but it used different voltage so she bought a new one when they moved here. She said it does bread and cookie dough with no problem. My question is for anyone who owns a Kenwood mixer. Do you like it and does it work well for stiff dough?

Hi Julia,

  For myself I would love to have a KitchenAid but it would not be used enough to justify the cost. I ran across a comparison of the two you may be interested in.

While I don't have first hand experience with a Kenwood mixer, it has been on our list as replacement for the Kitchen Aid mixer in case it breaks down. We have also been looking into the Thermomix, but it is way too expensive.

There are a few things to consider, most importantly the bowl size and attachments (if you plan on using any). Kitchen Aid has a wider selection of attachments.

Kitchen Aid also has two series, the regular one which is belt driven (5 quart bowl) and the professional gear driven with a 6 quart bowl (this is the one we have). One of the annoying things about it is the noise it makes due to the gears.

Stiff dough is always a challenge for any machine and it all depends on the amount you make. You may be able to find charts online about the amount of dough you can make with the machine.

Overall I would tend to the Kenwood if we have to replace our Kitchen Aid.

For all those smaller machines, do not expect them to be able to handle large amounts. Maybe dough for two breads but that is it...

We rarely use the Kitchen Aid anymore, since we bake so much that it is simply too small and we also have a 10 quart and a 20 quart mixer... 20 quart makes about 18 lbs of heavy bread dough in on  batch, the 10 quart about 8 lbs and the KitchenAid about 4 lbs.

Gosh,  I'd love to have a proper mixer,  both of those look fab (if you're listening Santa Clause [emoji4]). My poor little own-brand hand mixer takes alot of abuse!

The review was subjective and I didn't understand the comment about attachments and the kitchen aid being limited. There are tons of attachments for the kitchen aid . That said, I would take into consideration the specs on each and repair history if possible. I'd also want to know if something does break, how easy is it to get parts or get it fixed. Models matter two. I'm sure that both manufacturers make different models that have different specs that would affect reliability and duty cycles. It's the same with stoves. Most of the residential stuff is crap. If you want something real good, you have to go to blue star, garland or imperial. Most people wouldn't know what they are, but they are equipment that will last a lifetime and have a wide operational range.

Our stove is Jennair.  I absolutely love it. The burners unplug and you can replace them with a griddle. It came with the house.

Well, there is that... the 10 qt we have is a commercial Anvil Mix7110 (which I think is now Vollrath), and the 20 qt is a Vollrath.

We debated a Hobart but the Vollrath has a built in timer...

Wow. That's a mixer. I don't think I would even be able to lift that. It must have cost over $1000.00. I'm sure it did. You must do a LOT of baking!

Unfortunately yes to all... it is about 220 lbs in pure metal. We actually had the delivery company put it in place and have not mov d it since. I tried to lift it's predecessor only 170 lbs) of the little pedestal it I severely strained several muscles in my back. Just getting off the floor took me about 4 hours and almost 6 month to recover... never again.

It is mostly my wife baking...

Wow Sarah - That mixer is something else! 

Julia - I'm not an expert on mixers but did buy a Kitchenaid for my brother and his wife as a wedding present this year.  They use it all the time and love it.  Me personally, I'll be honest that I preferred it over the Kenwood as it's such a pretty thing to keep in a kitchen plus everything can be replaced meaning it could last forever.  From what I saw, neither the Kenwood nor the Kitchenaid were light and I can't imagine many people would want to keep dragging them in and out of a cupboard very often

I have the professional Kitchen Aid which is getting close to 20 years old. While sometimes it's used for other things, it's primary  used for making bread. My daily bread is made in a bread machine but rolls and sourdough aren't bread machine compatible. It might be a little on the noisy side but the Ice Cream machine is far worst. If I ever make Ice Cream with guest over, I am going to put it in another room.

 I have a Kitchen Aid but I never use it to make bread. I make bread 3 or 4 times a month, I mix and knead the bread by hand been doing it that way since I was kid.  Each batch yields 5 loaves and one tray of buns or cinnamon rolls.

Interesting debate as I have an old Oster which has served me well but is on it's last leg so I've been looking about for a new mixer as well

My first KitchenAid mixer lasted 35 years. I could have repaired the worn parts, but a new mixer would cost just a little more. A KitchenAid is more than a mixer. It has attachments that do numerous jobs. If it does what you need to be done, then it is hard to go wrong with a KitchenAid. I kept the attachments and just bought a new mixer. All the old attachments work just fine.

In may last house I redid the kitchen and put a blue star cook top in. All cast iron burners are grates. Grates were like 10lbs each. Very heavy duty and 2 of the burners were 23k+ btu each and they're open burners. After cooking with that almost anything else is a disappointment.

Very cool. I worked at a company 16 years ago that made fudge mix. We had huge Hobarts in the test kitchen. They rocked.

Hey Julia, kitchenaid here, I've owned one for ten years I've made sourdough breads and all sorts of stuff. It's fallen off the worktop on a tiled floor, no damage except broken tiles. They're not cheap but dollar for years it's cheaper than the cheaper ones.( if your see what I mean).
