Fruitcake. Disgusting door stop or Christmas treat?

Julia really!!!! Are you a foody? Anchovies to fruit cake. Well my feeling on fruit cake is that it is delicious if made right. Too many people make it really dry and who likes dry cake. My mother makes a killer one and you want to eat more. So yes to fruit cake like 110%!!!!

How you make fruitcake makes a big difference.  My grandma makes a wretched fruitcake.  It's dry, it has that nasty candied fruit that's like chewing little erasers and I don't know if it's because she pours rum over hers but it has a bitter after taste. It's just nasty. My great aunt makes a good fruitcake according to my dad and it was hers he liked. My grandma isn't a bad cook at all she just has weird ideas. Like mixed vegetables suspended in green Jell-O . Yarf! She calls it holiday salad.

Seriously, it's not about the fruit cake, it's about you. If someone like Julia gives you a nice soft delicious fruitcake, she's telling you something. As is the person who gives you a brick style, inedible Dollar Store fruitcake. It's up to you to understand the meaning of the gift.

My usual thoughts on fruitcake are place fruitcake in catapult, douse with gasoline, light and launch out to sea...

But Julia's recipe had me at cherries, pineapple and macadamias... I'd love to try a bit of that kind

Lol. I had one of those once. Instead of the usual PBJ sandwich my dad always put in my lunch for school I had 2 pieces of bread.  I don't know if he had been tired or what when he made it. Lol

I'm not entirely sure I've ever had it. Partly because I'm not all that fond of cakes, but also because it always looked to me a bit like Christmas pudding, which is something that traumatised me as a kid one Christmas when my brother took a huge bite on a spoonful and it pretty much welded his jaws shut for several minutes. I have no idea what was in it, but I thought it was punishment for him complaining that the turkey was too dry.

The wild-eyed stare of panic and several alarmed hand gestures told me all I needed to know about cakes and stuff over the festive period, lol.
