Anybody try a patient assistance program for Androgel?

So my doctor prescribed the Androgel 1.62% pump, which is $600 a month.  I checked for coupons on Good RX, but there weren't any.  I know the shots are much cheaper, but for various medical reasons the more steady delivery system of the gel would be better for me.

I know patient assistance programs exist for expensive medications, since I've used them in the past.  To use them, you need to know the manufacturer of the drug and get your doctor to submit a lot of paperwork.  My doctor is extremely busy, and Androgel appears to be a generic so I'm not sure which manufacturer to write to.

My stepmother found this middleman company that will do the work for you for $50 a month.  They claim the medication will be free.  Part of me is like, "Screw this, if they can get it for free, than so can I," but another part of me is overwhelmed by the process (they don't make it easy to get free stuff) and just wants to say, "You guys take care of it."

What would you guys do in my place?

I'd give the company a go if the hassle is mostly just getting everything set up. $50 versus $600... worth a try at least.

Google is your friend. AbbVie Global seems to be the name that keeps popping up however there is another way to find out. The original packaging material needs to contain the manufacture and lot number should the product need to be traced or recalled. Your Pharmacist should be able to provide this information and may also be aware of rebait or other programs to reduce the cost. AbbVie also has a link on their web site to PPA where free financial assistance is provided.

That's why i didn't go on T until i had insurance that would cover it. Not that it matters, it's only $20 for a vial for me. My reflux meds cost more....

Get your doctor to do that paperwork and they can find the manufacturer for you - that is what they are there for and they should be able to look up the manufacturer pretty easily. Busy or no, you are their patient and they prescribed something that you can't afford. If you don't have insurance, they should be helping you find a way to pay. If the doctor himself is busy, they DO have PAs and people in the office that might be able to do the legwork and leave the signing to the doctor once it's put together.

I would be leery of any "middleman" company that's saying they can get the drug for you for free for a monthly fee. Unless it's a legit insurance company, medical aid, etc etc that your doctor (or someone in the medical profession) can vouch for. Do a lot of research before deciding - you don't want to end up with crappy product or missing $$. There are plenty of scams out there.

I would just have the doctor do the assistance program. Again - that's what they are there for. I'm sure he can have his PA or someone in the office do most of the work, then he can finish it off and send it in. If they outright refuse, well, then ask about other options - mention the company your stepmom found.
