Hello,

Does anyone know of or have used a free online typing course? I only took typing in the 9th grade a very very long time ago, lol. Been using the computer for messaging and I will be writing extensively here over the next few years. So, poking around with 3 or 4 fingers just ain't getting it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Jamie:   Easy to find.   Just go to google search or any search engine that you currently use and enter into the search line    free online typing course   I immediately came up dozens of hits but the very first one appeared to be just what you asked for... and the other ones looked like what you wanted too.

Moral of the story,  Let Google be your friend...  LOL

When I was in high school my mother browed a typing book for the summer. I learned the proper keystrokes but didn't use it after that summer. When I was in college and discovered computers for the first time, my typing speed was bad because I had started with two fingers. I quickly decided the only way to get my typing speed up to a decent rate was to suffer using all my fingers until my typing speed was usable. Forcing myself to use all my fingers brought my typing speed up to a reasonable rate but because I am composing my writing instead of copying, my normal typing speed isn't blazing.

Older typing courses are structured to teach you the strokes and build up you finger strength in order to handle a manual typewriter. If you understand the strokes, there is no longer a need to build up the strength so typing anything is all you need to regain your speed.

I used a Mavis Beacon program a long time ago and got my speed up to around 40 to 50 wpm.  It's not blazing but was a lot faster than the one finger method.

Now, in this modern era, I am back to mostly the one finger method on my phone keyboard.  That finger has become fairly fast though and I can put out 25 to 30  wpm.  Auto correct and the phone's word prediction speeds things up.

Generally, that's plenty fast if I'm thinking up something original to write and not just copying something.

I didn't take typing when I was in high school, as it wasn't offered in the stream I was in.  However, I recall they taught manual typewriters first, then electric. Back then, in the late '60s, you had to be in the Business & Commerce stream to get stuff like typing, shorthand, book keeping etc.  I was in Science, Technology and Trades.

Thanks ladies. I used an electric during the 9th grade. Computers were limited to basic and fortran when I was in college, lol. I only have a good ole flip phone. I use the laptop for all of my browsing and such. I never had to type much in the military (thank goodness).

I took typing in high school because I was heading off to college and wanted to be able to type papers and whatnot.  This was the late '70s.  I managed, after two courses of typing, to get up to 70 words a minute.  I have no idea what I type now...especially since I make all kinds of mistakes! :D

I re-taught myself typing once computers became a thing.  Anyone Remember the TRS80?  My ex had one back in the day, and I used to be really into BBSes.

Wow, Deborah, one-finger typing!  Most phones are designed to be typed with both thumbs. ;)  Sounds like it works for you, so that's cool.

Never had one, but I certainly remember them.  I also used BBSs a lot.
