The very young actor that played Jake didn't actually get much screen time.
The movie was more about the life stresses of the parents. The movie portrays Jake as somewhere on the LGBT scale. Short scenes show Jake wearing a tutu or sparkly stuff and watching lots of disney princess movies.
The stress is the two parents having different views on how to be a good parent to Jake. Friends are pointing out the obvious to them, they are unsure what is right/what to do. They laugh, the cry, they argue, mom discovers she is pregnant, miscarries, fast forward a few minutes, we're at the end of the movie, and tra-la-la, mom, dad and Jake live happily ever after.
It's just an OK, movie. I generally would skip it.
