Hi Girls

i have an electrolysis session tomorrow and will be using numbing cream / Elma for the first time.  I don't really have that much facial hair left (I have done about 70 hours so far, and have 10 or fewer hours left) - so I am dealing with a number of sparse hairs on my neck and upper jaw/in front of ears on each side of my face.

I would like to spread Elma on all of this area and wondered whether this was safe / whether there was a limit on the area size Elma could be spread without risk?  I don't want to overload my bloodstream with whatever is in the numbing cream if possible.

Thanks all and happy zapping to you too.

Numbing creams have caused death, but I don't think using Elma on the face would be sufficient for that. There's better sources than thus, but I can't find it right now.

I don't have specifics on maximum dosages.  Maybe talk to your pharmacist or doctor about that.

I choose an area for my electrocutioner to work on and cover the whole area.  So, for example, I might do one entire cheek, or one side of the neck, or the jaw and front of the neck.  There is no point in covering more than that, since she can only do so much in an hour.  I cover it thickly, since I am quite sensitive to pain.  My electrologist has to scrape me off the ceiling at times!   ;)

I have had no trouble with that kind of quantity.  Note that the principle risk is of irregular heartbeats.  I get those anyway from time to time, but I have had no increase in them as a result of using Emla.

Some tips for using Emla...  Apply it at least one hour before your appointment.  Immediately cover it with plastic wrap (e.g. Saran Wrap) and tape down the edges to make it airtight.  Keep the cover on until the last second.  I let my electrologist remove it when she is ready to start.

Yes, wearing plastic on your face is embarassing, but it's what is required for adequate pain control.

For additional pain protection, cover the plastic with a layer of gauze, and then tape a second layer of plastic wrap over that.  While this is more obvious than the plastic alone, it looks like a medical dressing for some injury, and is less likely to raise comments.  And the extra insulation helps the Emla be absorbed by the skin.

It is safe to use for the entire face. Large surface areas (legs or back) or extra prolonged exposure (too many or too long use of the patch form) is where the potential issues would come.

I had been using some otc 4% lidocaine for my appointments and they worked well enough for me.  My electrologist asked me if I could get some Emla and see how it compared. Someone else had asked her about it and being a prescription item she asked me.  I happened to have a doctor appointment that same day so I  asked and my doctor prescribed it. I've used it since and I think it works better. I have not needed to do the occlusion (plastic wrap) with it. I only use it on the specific areas being treated that day (where ever I choose not to shave beforehand).

Also - avoid caffeine 8 hours beforehand, and drink lots of water.  I found that made a difference in reducing overall pain levels.

The pamphlet inside the box has a template of the dosage size. make sure to cover with plastic wrap to keep moist and apply it about 1 1/2 to 2 hours ahead of the appointment.

Thank you all girls, much appreciated!!!

I applied the cream about 90 minutes before the session and the pain was totally fine.  I normally do blend electrolysis but this time it was thermolysis, which is generally meant to be less painful.

i will probably go back again to blend as the kill rate seems to be higher using that method.
