I'm a twenty-one year old transwoman living in Eastern Tennessee and I've been doing nothing but factory work for the last three years so I haven't had much of a problem (aside from bathrooms). But recently I decided I wanted to try working at a retail place for a change and Walmart's the only decent paying one. On my application though I don't know what I should mark down for "gender" since I'm pre-medical transition but I dress and live as a woman daily. I don't know Walmart's policies on transgender employees. Any suggestions?

I have a few friends that work at Walmart in different cities and they tell me that WalMart's policies on gender and sexual preference are quite liberal and usually does not result in any negative issues.  Obviously some of this good news depends on the local management but the corporate rules seem to be clearly favorable regarding acceptance.

I am certain that other members, after reading what you wrote in your posting will be along to share their thoughts with you.

I am so glad that you have just become a member of Susan's Place and that you have shared your interesting and detailed posting with the members here on the Forums.  Many of our members will now be aware of your arrival here on the Forums and can address some of the things that you stated on your very first posting here.

I am thinking that you may have lots more questions and concerns, this is the right place for you to be to find out what others have done that may have been in your circumstances.
Be aware that there are a lot of members here that can identify with your situation as you feel free to share it.

I spent over 8 years at our Walmart before getting let go. When I started in 07 it was a decent place to work. But it got worse and worse. Cutting hours then making you work longer hours to cover. Since Mr Sam Died. ( Sam Walton) the company has gone down hill. Now all the Walton family wants is MONEY. They don't care what happens to the workers s long as they get $$$$. As an department manager we got the shaft most always. Often having to work in a totally different area of the store you know nothing about. When I was let go I was making almost $16 an hour. But the stress was terrible. I got another position less than a month later, while less pay. A lot less stress. I have been there close to 2 1/2 yrs and I am an Asst. Manager already. Still with less stress then I ever had at Wally world. However that is at our local store. Other stores maybe different, all depends on the management team.

That aside. They have no set rules on transgender. except for equality and harassment, which every business has now a days. Even their work attire policy doesn't have the typical male can only wear this and female that. It is all together. I often thought about coming to work in a skirt. Making sure it was proper length and color. To see what actually would happen.

I currently work for Walmart and thoroughly read all their discrimination policies a few months ago. They do have policies in place protecting trans people (I think they just wrote them a year or two ago), but that doesn't guarantee that you won't be discriminated against, it just means that your managers (or the person hiring you) can't do something to you specifically because you're trans, so they have to find other excuses to fire/not hire you.

So, I've decided not to come out at all and just try to pass as male until at least March so I can save up and move to CO. I'm in Alabama right now and already on hormones, but the general vibe I get is that people here are vehemently anti-trans, so even with the company's newly trans-friendly attitude, I don't want to risk coming out at work. I think there's at least a 50/50 chance I'd lose my job if I did.
