Question About FFS

Hi all,

So I'm not sure if this is the right forum but I'd love some feedback. I'm not genetically intersex but I'm a cisgender woman who reads as male/androgynous. I have strongly masculine features and it's upsetting to be "clocked" as the opposite gender. I have a hard time keeping jobs and a social life because of the ridicule; it is deeply distressing to say the least.

I found out that Starbucks offers insurance that Dr. Spiegel will accept. Is it possible for a cisgender woman to get FFS covered? If so, how would I go about it?

Hi, and welcome to Susan's Place! The brutally honest answer to your question is no. To have FFS covered, you need to meet all of the WPATH requirements: a diagnosis of gender dysphoria being first and foremost. By your own admission, you are a cisgender woman merely unsatisfied with your looks. Probably not what you wanted to hear, I know.

Hello, I think having a therapist you can trust and talking openly to them about this can be a good first step. I would also mention what ffs is and that you don't see it as cosmetic. It may take time, but explaining what you've been through with ridicule at work and in your social life could help them understand. A good therapist should also be doing their research.

I intended to have a therapist I met with write a medical necessity letter for ffs, but I think a few things happened for me that it wasn't succesful. The first and most important reason was that I was still too early in my transition on hormones at 4-5 months. By the time I wasn't able to see the therapist I was 6-7 months and felt it was too soon for me anyway. He was also older, about in his 60s or early 70s and from the start I remember him insisting that I "didn't need it". It was honestly a waste of my time because he would fall asleep in sessions...

Good luck I hope you have a better and smoother process than I have had. I know better now for when I try again sometime. Even though he agreed he would write the letter, when I met with him it seemed he was just confused about it just never worked out for me sadly.

Welcome to Susan's Place. It would depend on how your insurance policy is written. Some might cover cosmetic surgery and others definitely don't. If the policy covers it, there could be conditions that need to be met for coverage. Insurance coverage varies from state to state and company to company so the first thing that needs to be done is to study the policy or ask the company.

Erm, i think there are many components of FFS like hairline, type 1-3 forehead contouring  and rhino and perhaps it might not even be FFS that you need, but rather plastic surgery. In this regard i think maybe deschamps might also be a good surgeon suggestion for you, i think from his website he covers many issues of PS and not just ffs i think. Just google Deschamps ffs.
