Im cisgender boy but my girlfriend is Chinese MTF transgender, i often travel to China due to my work and to visit her.

This situation is a little new for me because she is my first transgender girlfriend and we are living some things that are new for me (like discrimination, persecution and hidding her transgender condition to avoid it); and due to my ignorance related to this issues i prefer to ask here in the forum where i think most of people have a lot of experience with this kind of issues.

My main two questions related with being transgender in china are:
1) Is China a good place to be transgender?
2) The only way in china for a MTF transgender to be recognize lika a woman is sex replacement surgery. Did the state and people treat you like a woman after surgery?

I really appreciate your answers and any other feedback related to the issue.

First of all, you are a wonderful boyfriend for being strong and intelligent enough to stick by your girlfriend during everything.  It can be a long, drawn-out process being recognized as her true self.

I honestly don't know what the situation is in China, but I can hopefully educate you a little bit, if you don't mind.

Your poor girlfriend may always be harassed as long as she's in China.  Many Asian countries seem to be a bit behind in accepting the fact that "not only have there always been transgender people, but we're not out to hurt/fetishise anyone/be perverted to anyone/etc." Most of us simply wish to live our lives as the gender we should have been born as.  Unless she goes stealth (hides the fact that she's transgender) and can pass as a women, harassment should be expected.

I'm FTM, but the feelings are the same.  I expect to sometimes be harassed simply because I'm trans, so because of it, I'm extra careful when I go places.  I carry pepper spray and a personal alarm because of this, something you might want to suggest to her.

Gender Replacement Surgery (GRS) is a major surgery, and one that not every trans person wants to/needs to undergo, or sometimes they simply can't afford to have.

I have yet to have GRS, but I had my name, all of my IDs and even my passport legally changed over to male.  It took doctors' letters, and patience, but it's doable.  I'm now recognized as a legal male, and I get treated as such, especially since my voice has dropped, and I have a (slight) beard.  Here in the US, in many states, having GRS is not a necessity in order to be legally recognized as your true gender.

I hope that your girlfriend is doing her research in what is needed in her country in order to legally be recognized as female.  I'm sure you can help her in that regard, it seems like you already are.

I wish both you and her the best of luck.

Ryuichi13, thank you so much for your reply.

Yes, my girlfriend constantly repeat about GRS is the way for her to be respected as a woman in China, but China is a very closed mind society and im not sure about it; it is true that the only way for a transgender (at least MTF as i know) to be legally consider a woman is GRS. Im worry about doing the surgery and continue to be discriminated, thats why i ask here in the forum, to see if someone in the community has more knowledge about it.

Im also considering moving her to other country, a country with better laws and rights for transgenders but i dont know where to start to research...

I am considered somewhat of an expert in regards to TGs in China. I suggest you look at my video by Vice Media on this subject and I also am doing a front page cover on this issue for a magazine. China includes Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan plus what we refer to as the mainland china. HK and Macau are relativly accepting with legal protection from hate provokers but not in mainland. Its not the laws but the society does not accept and there is a great lack of family support. If you are not post op and do not pass easily DO NOT used female facilities. Changes in Asia take time and requires condideration and respect from tg of others feelings. We are the newcomers and must give time for acceptance.
When we first start our journey the perception and moral values all dramatically change in wonderment. As we evolve further it all becomes normal again but the journey has changed us forever.
