We have traveled a long, long way down that road in the last 7 years.  Very sad.

Having an ID on yourself at all time is not just needed in dictatorship.
You need to have one on yourself at all time in France since forever.
I think the national ID -> Fascism link or vartious dictatorship is rather teneous.
Most people except children already have some sort of ID on them (though not a national one).
For me its a State VS Central government battle more than anything else.
If such a thing was proposed here (Canada)
the argument against it would also be province vs central.
I just hate over the top arguments. If you hate central ID in your pocket, fine, but don't
think soon any policement won't have it on his blackberry with your photo. So, the point is
kinda pointless.

Its the old, its not the tech that's evil, but the people.
And contrary to the atom bomb or guns, this won't kill you right away.

agreed, and it was not helped by states that had little to no control over the ones they issue.

Actually someone I know said that if you don't have one of those Real ID's, they will request a passport and/or subject you to additional screening...so as far as I see it, people will still get on planes, just not as easily as now.
