I always TRY to tell myself that, since I can never know the full circumstances and history of another person, I should not judge them, since it's those circumstances that determine who and what they are. Even psychopathy has now been found to have a cause, for example, manifesting as the combination of an insensitivity to Seratonin, in combination with certain factors in history such as largely being raised by a peer-group rather than parent figures. At the end of the day everything is a combination of nature and nurture, and we can't really blame people for that.
I do believe though that we always have a choice, as human beings, to go against our programming, whether it be instinctive, genetic or determined by our past. We can remake ourselves, and instead of being down on the ones that don't manage that, I try to celebrate the people that do.
That's the theory anyway - I don't always manage to apply it though, 'cause sometimes people can make it really hard not to hate their guts.
