Nearly Half of Republicans Want Government Less Involved in Transgender People's Lives

Story by Suzanne Blake (13 Nov 2024)

A poll found nearly half of Republicans think the government should actually regulate transgender people less, not more.

In a new survey from Data for Progress, 58 percent of all voters were in agreement that "the government should be less involved in what transgender people are allowed to do, including the health care they can receive." This included a strong majority of independents and potentially a surprising plurality, 45 percent, of Republicans.

"Whether it's abortion or transgender rights, the majority of Americans and a significant number of Republicans believe that we have a right to decide what we do with our own bodies and personal lives without government interference," Danielle Deiseroth, the executive director at Data for Progress, told Newsweek.

"Our polling suggests that a lot of Republicans disagree with this approach, even if they are not generally supportive of transgender rights, because they think the government should be less involved in regulating what people are allowed to do."

The question in the survey focused on general freedom from the government for transgender people, not about children's issues or government funding related to transgender health care, which Republicans are still likely to be against, said Robert Shapiro, a political science professor at Columbia University.

Of course, the bad news is that more than half of the Republicans polled think the government should be more involved in the lives of transgender people.

I don't think "voters" and "republicans" should be used in the same sentence. Several of my friends from across the pond stated the vote to get the orange messiah back again was a "hold your nose and put an X in the place that cared about your bank balance" moment. The lesser of two evils kind of thing. Which is very sad, but this is... no real wonder when you poll normal people, not the cult he surrounds himself with.

The fact is that many Republicans want things the way it used to be. They prefer the as long as I am not forced to deal with to what you want approach. It's when it moved beyond that where republicans and many voters started to take actions we have seen in recent years. Hugs

I like to think most people on a 1 to 1 basis probably want the other person to do whatever makes them happy really, as long as it isn't going to affect them!

But then they get together...

Hopefully, more often than not people will listen to their own honest opinions, their conscience, more rather than worrying about  press reports or their X profile standing.
