Cassie you are so right. "On the Beach"  I got the DVD as a Christmas present even - thou I am not allowed to watch it while my wife is home.

It is a really sad movie - I wonder in real life if people would behave with the dignity & organisation portrayed if they were aware that they were all going to die in the near future

I like romantic comedies the best (yeah, I know "chick-flicks" -- hey, anything for a tear)

Dave  (Great score, great heart)
Forest Gump  (great score, great heart)
Phenomenon  (anyone can be smart if they try)
As Good As It Gets  (love comes in all flavors)
Harold And Maude  (written by Colin Higgins who wrote and directed Silver Streak and Foul Play - he died from aids)
High Anxiety  (all the Mel Brooks movies are on DVD except for my favorite of his)
American Beauty  (dark humor, clever)
A Little Romance  (an American girl falls in love with a French boy)
Friends  (no, not the TV show!)
Big  (Fantasy with warmth and love)
Goodbye Girl  (clever wit)

On action flicks...

Fugitive  (Great score, great action)
Patton (best action score ever)
Shawshank Redemption (2nd best action score ever)
Das Boot  (I love submarine movies!)
Butch Cassidy  (best dialogue)
Lawrence of Arabia  (spectacle!  David Lean at his best)
North By Northwest (Misunderstood guy wins at end)

On animated films...
Finding Nemo  (loved the heart)
Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol  (loved the songs)
Ice Age  (good caring friends)

All of the movies above have something that I prize a lot...great scores (in my opinion).  I generally prize melodies, something that's somewhat out of fashion these days.  Many films today seem to have rhythm tracks for scores.  Well, as a music editor, I know it's easy to cut or lengthen.

When I go on long car trips, I sometimes play the film on a cassette -- I know what visually happens from seeing the film.  It often sounds like a magnificently produced radio show.

I appreciate movies about transsexuals but don't list them as my favorites.  I keep hoping that, someday, this transsexual thing will be old hat and people will move onto something else.

I don't like violent films -- nuff of that in society already.

Shawshank Redemption (2nd best action score ever)

I'm just wondering why you consider this movie an action film?

Anyway, I like movies ALOT! So I have more to add to my list.

-Cube,Hyper Cube,Cube Zero (really good scifi movies)
-Dark City (The Matrix stole alot from this movie IMO)
-12:01 (Think Ground Hog Day but add a scifi twist.)
-A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum (Very Funny Musical)
-Willy Wanka and The Chocolate Factory the old one not the new one.
-In Her Shoes (Such a touching Film about the bond between sisters)

You're right, Lessa.  "Drama" would be more accurate in describing "Shawshank Redemption."  I like it in that it shows how intelligence and perseverence can win out in the end.  Probably a message for all of us, or for that matter, all humanity.  We all strive to break free of our prisons and walk on that warm beautiful beach.

I second this... I have fond memories of this film.

It is, however, edged out of the best musical I know by the 1983 (movie) version of The Pirates of Penzance.

Wow, so many...

Anything with Ashley Judd, Harrison Ford, Bridgette Fonda, Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, or Mila Jovovich. She is my favorite actress. Mila is the coolest chick of all, I just love her. She was in 5th Element with Bruce so that would probably be one of my all time favorites. She was also in Zoolander, and Resident Evil 1&2. She is the orginal tough chicky.

I also like Kate Beckinsale in underworld and the Blade Triology with Wesley Snipes. I just love movies 

For movies that are clever I like "The Usual Suspects", "Thomas Crown Affair"..Pierce Brosnan...sigh..best 007 ever..and Shawshank Redemption is another all time Favorite. So is the Green Mile... I watch that when I need a good cry 

One movie I have been watching over and over lately is Sin City. I think it is so well done. It is really violent but very sexy.

Going off of what your talking about how you'll watch anything with certain actors/actresses I'd have to say: Jim Carrery, Tim Currery, Julia Stiles(I loved her character in 10 Things I Hate About You), Samual L Jackson, Al Pacino, Robin Williams, Katey Segal (even though she hasn't been into many movies I love her TV shows!), Danzel Washington, Camron Diaz and so many more.

I second the motion on "Green Mile."  And anything with Tom Hanks ('cept for that stranded on an island movie - silly).  Ahh, guess I'll have to confess to loving "Lost In Seattle" and its precurser with Cary Grant, "An Affair To Remember."  Sniffle.

And I, too, loved "Six Days, Seven Nights."  Remember Ford telling her something like "You women don't need to try hard to please a man.  Just show up."

Well if you want to talk about favorite romantic movies how about Message In A Bottle with Kevin Costner. I always cry in the end. 

Another one I like which you may not see as a traditional romance more of a strong endearing freindship is Gaurding Tess with Nicholas Cage and Shirley McClain.

Anna And The King with Jodi Foster and Yun Fat Chow a story of love that cannot be.

Hmmmm just started noticing a pattern here none of these end with boy gets girl or vice versa. I guess I'm just a tragic love story kind of gal. Nicholas Cage is one of those actors I'll go to see his movies just because he's in it.

Cassie - Remember Nicholas Cage before he decided to go for the big bucks in expensive (and sometimes mindless) action pix?  Remember "Peggy Sue Got Married?"  Nicholas got the girl.  And the best lesson:  That, if we had a chance to live our lives over, we'd probably live our same mistakes because that's what we want, in our hearts.

"Message In a Bottle" was good but it's so sad that he doesn't end up sailing away with her.  Perhaps life is like that but I would have preferred the fantasy.  Fantasies are not fluff to me...they give us hope.  But what do I know?  When a short film I did in college was reviewed by fellow film students, my favorite comment regarding the end of my film was "good as Lassie coming home."

Old Yella,   so long ago - and the very first movie that made me cry.   Can remember the night after watching it, getting under the bed clothes putting a pillow over my face so nobody could hear & sobbing my heart out.

Wow, lots of good movies mentioned here...like many of you, I loved "Shawshank Redemption".  I can still hear the music soaring over the thunder when Andy escapes through that sewage tunnel and is standing in the stream...great story.

I also love movies with a Holiday theme.  Any version of "A Christmas Carol" will do.  I know "Scrooged" was technically a bad movie, but I loved Carol Kanes hyperactive performance, LOL!

It's interesting how, despite our TS similarities, some of our faves for movies can be quite different.  Society tends to lump people together in catagories.  These lists prove our individuality.

I remember some more that had sad endings:  Charlie (Flowers for Algernon), Awakenings (Robin Williams as a doc in a mental institution), and Phenomenon (John Travolta).  In all three movies, people wake up from mundane existence and, for awhile, life is magical.

Sally Hemings - Cameron Ejogo - need I say more?
Mary Queen of Scots -with Vanessa Redgrave (the David Rizzio murder scene is in my opinion one of the
                              best in cinematic history)
Braveheart - got to love those medieval war scenes
Quo Vadis - love this in spite of the glaring inaccuracies in every scene (but of course it is based on the
                book which is also bursting with glaring inaccuracies)
Gia - hot lesbian love action

               and many more, but my memory fails me at the moment.
In short anything Roman, anything with Peter Ustinov (the man's hilarious!), anything with Angelina Jolie , and anything at all of historical value.
