Judge Blocks Trump Order Restricting Medical Treatments for Transgender Children, Teens

A federal judge temporarily blocked a Trump administration order that threatened to cut federal funds for hospitals that provide medical treatments for transgender patients under 19.

U.S. District Judge Brendan Hurson in Baltimore issued the temporary restraining order during a hearing Thursday. It bars the government from enforcing the order for the next two weeks while arguments in the case continue. He also ordered the government to release any funds paused under the executive order.

The Jan. 28 executive order directed federal agencies to withhold funding to institutions that provide common gender therapies, including drugs that delay the onset of puberty, to anyone under the age of 19. President Trump's order gave the Department of Health and Human Services 60 days to develop a plan and 90 days to publish updated guidance. However, some providers were so concerned about the loss of federal funding for research, medical education and healthcare, that they scaled back almost immediately.

A group of minors and their families sued Trump and HHS, alleging the order was intended to discriminate against trans individuals and exceeded the president's authority. They said it was up to states to regulate healthcare, rather than the federal government.

Advocates for transgender rights and major U.S. medical associations say that such treatments protect transgender youth from the harm, including depression and suicide, that could result from a lack of treatment.

Good on this judge. It's easy to sit behind a desk, with a bunch of sycophants telling you you're awesome, and drive a tank through real peoples' lives.

The only time Trump probably came into contact with a trans woman, she probably told him he looked like a melty orange owl, and had to be restrained from slapping the guy. He is the worst kind of cult leader.

All you folks in the US, be very wary if he brings out his sparkling orange brand of Kool-aid.
