USDA Cancels $600,000 Research Grant Because It Mentioned Trans Men Literally One Time

Story by Mathew Rodriguez (11 March 2025)

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) appears to have canceled a research grant for a study on the safety and sustainability of menstrual products because they believed it was a study on menstruation and trans men.

On Friday, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced on X that a $600,000 grant made to Southern University in Louisiana for the study of "menstrual cycles in transgender men" had been canceled. "The insanity is ending and the restoration of America is underway," Rollins wrote in a post accompanying a news article from The College Fix, a conservative higher education news site, announcing the grant's end.

According to the USDA website, the grant will actually fund research on the potential health risks posed by menstrual products made using synthetic materials, and advance research into products made from natural fibers. The program also sought to provide education about menstrual hygiene, and fund a fiber processing center in Louisiana. Of the project description, which is over 1500 words, trans men are mentioned once.

"It is also important to recognize that transgender men and people with masculine gender identities, intersex and non-binary persons may also menstruate," a sentence in one part of the grant reads.
