Found out my dad's latest health issue, took him to a heart doctor and it is not good news. I took him there this morning and he has congestive heart failure. Heart doctor saw he has Alzheimer's and said these can be linked. Going to put him on medication for it. I asked how long his life would be, said months and maybe a year if the medication works. Told mom this when I got him home, she knew it was not good. Looks like a long road for her to prepare for when he goes. Good thing is they have everything set when it happens, have a living trust put in place  so it does not end up in court. Dad is 74 and seen he has lived a long life

Experience tells me you should spend as much time as you can with him.  Maybe more with your Mom!  Not being cold, He may not know who you or your Mom are on any given day in any given hour.  That will be the hardest on your Mom.
One shouldn't open the book of another's life and jump in the middle.  I am a woman, I'm a mystery.  I still see and hear who I used to be, who I am, who I'm gonna be. - Richelle
"Where you'd learn do to that, miss?" "Just do it, that's all; ... I got natural talent." "I'll say you do, at that." - Firefly

Hospice care is something to look into as Medicare will pick up the bill when someone has less than six months to live.  It can be a way to preserve an estate from expensive medical bills.

It is not that bad yet with him. Plus he has it set with his health insurance plan

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad's diagnosis, NikkiM. This must be a difficult time for you and your family. My heart goes out to you and your mom as you navigate through this.

Make the most of  your  time together.  Stimulate  his memory  with  asking questions eg what was the  area he lived as a boy like.
Dad had early  signs of dementia  and was also  an alcoholic.  My sister  and myself  asked him to tell us about where he lived as a boy his time in the  RAF and the  time he rode one of the first Harley Davidson K models.

That's really touching. It sounds like your dad has been such a strong presence in your life, and that's a beautiful thing.

Ah, "Don't Blink", what a powerful and emotional choice.

Thank you for sharing that, NikkiM. 💗
