The recent executive order from Pres. Donald Trump directing the government to recognize only the male and female genders on official documents has sewn havoc among international transgender travelers wishing to visit the U.S., many of whom travel with passports bearing an X gender marker.

The traveling trans community might also encounter difficulty finding gender-affirming care as well, due to another executive order from Trump.

These moves have caused several countries to issue travel advisories to their transgender citizens who might be traveling to the U.S., usually advising them to contact the U.S. Embassy in their respective countries prior to making definitive travel plans.

Here are nine countries that have issued warnings to their transgender citizens considering travel to the U.S.

Austria
Denmark
Finland
France
Germany
Ireland
Norway
Slovakia
The Netherlands

The people screwing up trans people are jerks.

I'm pretty sure that list will get much longer. I refuse to hunker down. But, then again, fools rush in... So I tread carefully in Big Sky Country. Open space has no effect on closed minds.

Of course, the advice they may get from an Embassy prior to their departure doesn't in any way bind the US authorities.  The Embassy may not have any reason to believe there will be a problem, but experience shows us that the immigration authorities can (and will) do whatever they want.  You could get an okay from the embassy and still get thrown in an ICE prison for an unlimited length of time for any or no excuse at all.

Of course, this is just as true for cis travellers.  Basically, you're better off not travelling to the USA at all if you aren't a US citizen.  Maybe even if you are.

So true. My concern was if I leave to get surgery, what if they won't let me back in? OK, maybe I won't want to come back then. But what if I am detained at Guantanamo for an indeterminate amount of time? I'm not sure I want to take that risk.

Canada hasn't (yet) issued a travel advisory.  However, I have had a personal travel ban to the US for several years, just on general principles: I didn't want to be arrested for using the washroom.

But that was then; this is now.  It is just not worth taking the risk of trying to enter the US, even though my documents are all in order.  I could get disappeared and sent to a concentration camp in El Salvador.  It is much worse than it was, and so not worth it.

The only saving grace for Canadians is that, if you fly, you clear US Customs and Immigration on Canadian soil.  They can refuse you entry, but they have no jurisdiction to detain you.  That is not the case if you travel by road, though.  I have no intention of finding out.

If you're a US citizen, and your passport says "F", you probably don't have to worry about that.  If they ask you why you went to Thailand, just say you wanted to see the country, look at the temples.  I've never heard of US citizens being strip-searched.

On the other hand, maybe by the time  you get back they'll be rounding up trans people who are already here and putting them in detention camps.

That's what I am thinking. Once all of these government databases have been linked and searched "to root out fraud and illegal immigration" they will have no problems flagging any passports in the system. (For any reason)
