Story by Catherine Dominguez (17 July 2025)

Conroe ISD will not accept notes from parents asking that their children use a different pronoun over concerns about violating a new state law.

Senate Bill 12, authored by state Sen. Brandon Creighton, R-Conroe, was signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott June 20 and prohibits any diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in public schools, including charter schools. The move comes after at least five large Houston-area districts passed strict gender policies, some with language similar to that of the law.

The bill prohibits assisting students with "social transitioning," which is defined as adopting a different name or pronouns to express a gender identity different from their biological sex at birth. The bill also requires parental consent for any student to receive human sexuality instruction.

However, the district's draft of its policy based on the law allowed parents to give written consent for a child to be referred to by a pronoun that differs from the child's biological sex.

Trustee Melissa Semmler expressed concern about accepting a note from a parent.

"I'm concerned we aren't in compliance with that law," Semmler said.

The board agreed and unanimously voted to remove the language from the district's policy.
