Paperwork like licenses and birth certificates are not an issue. Only your mind is, I am far from a world traveler and I did it.
Indeed,  my mind is the issue.        [Why is there no emoticon with fingertips pressed together?]

Actually, I like the idea of picking my food off of bushes and trees and hiking through forests and hills and streams and valleys.     I think this is why people are so stressed.   That travel time would be perfect for unwinding, forgetting the nonsense, and making you appreciate the shack that you were probably going to end up living in.

    Ducking hostiles sounds fun too.

I really do want to take off these days, though.  Not to escape, but to discover.

Actually Rebis you can still travel that way. There is a pretty large hobo culture still riding trains and just plain hiking across the country on little to no money. My uncle does it when he gets tired of a place. If I remember right, last time he headed from Cali out to the mountains of New Mexico and ended up working construction in Mass. I think he left with 2 weeks food and maybe $200 or something. Will Weaton (actor on Star Trek) after the show, he tossed all he had into a storage locker and went riding trains for a year or 2 with no money. There still a lot of hitchhikers out there as well. There are scores of people traveling the planet with nothing, that sort of travel still exists, it may not be as dominant, but it does exist. Plus, with the advent of wire transfers and ATM's, you could head out with nothing and get money instantly if you got into trouble.

I am not trying to push you to go, just letting you know that what you want to do, is far from impossible, in fact some would say it is very easy. If you really want to try, next vacation time you get, go for a week or two, you could always catch a bus home at the end for cheap.

Here is an idea, why not try the easy and safe route, jump in the car and start driving, if you see something interesting, stop (old Route 66 is perfect for this). You never know where you may end up, you can sleep in truck stops, and even get a shower there. Eat things you pack. You can get across the country in a week easy and for only a bit more than the cost of gas. 2 weeks is more than enough time.

Even if you only get out of town, it can be very liberating and fun.

...you know, pica, i never really thought about the ky thing...heh.  probably because i don't think of it as 'kay-why'...

and em's right about the jack daniels thing.  that's a different kind of whiskey. :D  i'm pretty sure it was an accident too...something about the barrels...there was a thing on the history channel.  the bourbon beer...i have no idea...my roommates brought it home.  but you can make it yourself!  it's called a 'boilermaker', i believe...just put some bourbon in your beer.  I think Maker's Mark is probably the biggest bourbon maker...it's in Bardstown...a little south of here, but we have lots of distilleries...i never thought about it, but most of KY's (read: Kentucky's...smarty pants) counties are dry...that's funny.  hehe.

i would love to be a fly on the wall in this thread...heheheh.  we went from mild mannered androgynes to bourbon and daniel boone.  hehe.  i love us.  :icon_love:

sometimes I feel I'm so utterly mild tempered that I'm basically waiting through my life.

Like I'm doing nothing beyond waiting for my life to completely pass by.

Like my life is similar to standing at a bus stop or maybe I'm trying to say it feels like my life has as much meaning as if I were just standing at a bus stop for the entire time.

I often feel the same way, and then I look back and I am surprised at all I have done and experienced.  I know that may sound like I have lead an exciting life, compared to some probably not, but compared to others, definitely.

Life is what you make of it Rebis

I am not saying grab life by the horns or anything silly like that, I am not that type of person myself usually, but it seems clear to me you need to get out and experience something new. It does not need to be life changing, meaningful or expensive, just something or someplace new. Step out of your shell for a bit, see the world. Look on the net at some interesting things to see in the nearest major city, jump in your car and go.  No plan, just a list of things to see or do, preferably more than you have time for (makes it more exciting and leaves you wanting more).

You need to do something like this, don't think about it, just do it.

If you do nothing, then yes, your life is just passing you by.
What is life without something to look forward to or look back on.

And the unicorns said to Rebis: "Go forth from your native land and out of your father's house to seek your self, your blessing, and your life." Follow Pica Pica to Spain or Dan'l to Missouri or Brad Angier to BC. Make some waves. If only for a little while.

Don't wait for the bus; start walking. Hop a freight. Hang glide off a cliff.

Or as my mother would say when I complained I was bored and had nothing to do, "Why don't you clean your room?"

Best incentive to get a kid to go outside if there ever was one.

Rebis, clean your room or go outside!

Oh, I'm feeling okay and all.  I just have a habit of doing nothing when I should be doing something.   I have a head full of ideas, but I'm not expressing any of them.

Maybe I'll take the train up to the Boston museum of science or something.

Thanks everybody.  They are all good ideas.   The weather has changed and I'm going to be wandering around town again soon.

Good idea Rebis.

I'm so happy that you are feeling better and don't worry, I think we all go through periods where we feel unproductive.

If you consume enough bourbon, it can act like cough medicine. My wife's favorite cough medicine come in a bit bottle that says "Christian Brothers Brandy" on the label.

Rum, honey, mixed in hot water, use to be the old remedy for colds. I have been using Echanacia capsules, over the counter. I haven't had a cold or the flue in four years, I also quit smoking about 5 months ago.

Can I just say I hate you right now.  ;D

I get almost every flu and cold that comes my way, when the season starts I do all I can to stay away from people.

The secret is to shun breeders and their offspring.

Don't touch your eyes or nose.

Wash your hands often, especially after being near people or touching anything another person has touched.

Cover your face with something if people try to breathe near you.  They don't like it, but them and their germs can go to hell for all I care.
