"That's how I like to see all women; on their knees..."

A well-known kickboxing champion made this comment during a seminar that he was giving to a large group of male and female martial artists. It was the catalyst to finding a new approach to my martial arts training, and to my role as a women's self-defense instructor.

This is the article that lead me eventually to my martial arts instructor.  The first time she corrected my posture, she asked my permission to touch me.  This impressed me beyond belief.  A male instructor wouldn't do this.

Wow Lisbeth, that sounds like a classy lady. While I have the greatest respect for each of the Sensei that have taught me, they never did ask. Though none of them would EVER even think something as horrid as what you just described. Somebody like that has NO place in the martial arts. None.

The attitude is all too common, as witness... "I would be interested in seeing some of what they do and 'playing' with them for a bit!"

That is a sad reflection on noble traditions. I can only then say thank-goodness that I have been lucky enough to only have teachers that were gentlemen and true followers of Bushido.

Though perhaps it does have a bit to do with the lineage. My first sensei grew up in Okinawa and Portugal, and was one of the few men I can say that I would trust. Subsequently, I did Tai Chi with a little old man in Johannesburg who learned Yang Style while working in China as a diplomat, if I remember correctly, and then Sensei Greg, while I was in Taiwan, who taught Aikido and was as calm and at one as you could imagine - though that probably had as much to do with being a Zen Buddhist as being an Aikidoka. Mind you, the two really can't be separated.

Finding a good teacher is so important.
