The Out of the Closet and onto the Screen film series at Ithaca College will feature the 2006 documentary "Boy I Am" on Thursday, March 6, at 7 p.m. in Textor 101. The showing is free and open to the public."Boy I Am" explores the resistance of some in the feminist and lesbian communities toward female-to-male (FTM) transsexuals, viewing such transitioning as at best a "trend" or at worst an anti-feminist act that taps into male privilege. The film opens up a dialog among the lesbian, feminist and transgender communities while also promoting understanding of transgender issues for general audiences. It follows the experiences of three young FTMs in New York City—Nicco, Norie and Keegan—as they go through major junctures in their transitions, and includes the voices of lesbians, activists and theorists who raise and address the questions that many people have but few openly discuss.
The Out of the Closet and onto the Screen film series is sponsored by the Ithaca College Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Education, Outreach, and Services. This year's series focuses on the ways people transcend, challenge and redefine gender as we know it.
