The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network is a national education organization working to ensure safe schools for students, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.
http://www.union-bulletin.com/articles/2008/03/01/local_news/local04.txtThe nonprofit agency does a national survey every two years to document the experiences of students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender in America's schools.
Data from the 2005 National School Climate Survey (2007 results will be available later this spring) shows:
# More than 75 percent of students heard derogatory remarks such as "->-bleeped-<-got" or "dyke" frequently or often at school, and nearly nine out of 10 reported hearing "that's so gay" or "you're so gay" — meaning stupid or worthless — frequently or often.
