Legal gains a product of struggle

The movement for marriage rights for same-sex couples saw a watershed legal victory on May 17, 2004 when Massachusetts became the first state to legalize same-sex marriage.

Since that defining moment, additional legal victories have been won, such as the brief issuance of marriage licenses by the city of San Francisco, Calif. in February 2004. On Oct. 25, 2006, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled it was a violation of the state constitution to deny same-sex couples marriage rights. Legislation passed in New Jersey later that year on Dec. 14 providing for same-sex civil unions.
