"The bill proposed by state Representative Carl Sciortino, a Somerville
Democrat, would add the terms "gender identity and gender expression"
to existing antidiscrimination and hate crime laws in Massachusetts.
Transgendered people are people transitioning to a sex different than
the one they had at birth. Some wear clothes of the other sex, while
others have undergone hormone replacement therapy or sex-change
surgery."

Well that's good news to hear It appears that Massachusetts. is going to be the pioneer state in bringing laws in force to protect and serve those people who are transgendered. That's great news. Just hope to see more states take up the tempo.

Did you all know, no I guess not but read this. I am a transsexual woman and because of Massachusetts Law's my drivers license states I am F yes that's right female (yeah!) and now with the DSM V all steam ahead!!!!

    About five months ago my employer updated their harassment policy to include gender identity. They stated it was due to Mass law that had just included it in their laws. I wonder how this is different? I'm all for it, but is this more broad than just workplace related issues? I have to say, if Mass(My birth state & residence) had lower taxes, better self defense/firearms laws it really would be the perfect State!

If I remember correctly, the DSM-V says being transgender isn't a mental illness. I guess it shows less people think we're just a bunch of nutcases.

Regarding the DSM-V, here's a brief summary of the planned changes from the Wikipedia page. You can also read the exact changes on the GID page here.

Gender Identity Disorder (GID) will be renamed "Gender Dysphoria" in the DSM 5.[21] Along with these changes comes the creation of a separate Gender Dysphoria in Children as well as one for Adults and Adolescents. The grouping will be moved out of the Sexual Disorders category and into its own. The name change was made in part due to stigmatization of the term "disorder" and the relatively common use of "gender dysphoria" in the GID literature and among specialists in the area.[22] The creation of a specific diagnosis for children reflects the lesser ability of children to have insight into what they are experiencing and ability to express it in the event that they have insight.[23]

Basically, the diagnosis implies that dysphoria is the thing that needs to be fixed, rather than the implication that the cross-sex identification is the problem. It also makes it clear that sexual orientation is separate from gender identity.
