NINE YEARS AGO THIS WEEK, I spent a gut-wrenching day in Alabama, a male co-worker along for "protection." We were there so I could interview residents of the tiny town of Sylacauga about the murder of one of their own, Billy Jack Gaither, at the hands of two young men who admitted targeting him for being gay.
