A "Day of Silence" has encouraged some to speak out in opposition of the nationwide campaign. Supporters claim the purpose of the event is to create awareness of the abuse and harrassment of the gay, lesbian and transgender community.

Critics present the counter argument that this would be an opportunity for tax-payer-funded public schools to push a pro-homosexual agenda. To bolster their point, critics cite arguments that students and faculty are allowed to take part in the event.
