According to wire reports, Ronaldo was questioned by police in Brazil after claiming to be blackmailed by transgender prostitutes. When referring to the transgender people, Rome used the phrases, "->-bleeped-<-s," "shims," "he-she," "she-males," and "getting his freak on with some post-ops."
GLAAD immediately reached out to Rome about the offensive language. In a phone conversation GLAAD explained that the words used were outrageous and dehumanizing. Rome replied, "You're right. I'm sorry I said that. I should not have said that. And I will not do it again." Rome also promised to familiarize himself with GLAAD's Media Reference Guide so that future commentary about the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community will be told in a fair, accurate and inclusive manner.
