OH NO!! "real men" are becoming extinct!! *yawns* Most so called "real men" that I have met are total morons so their "extinction" would not bother me at all. This article comes off as whiny and pathetic in my eyes.

Funny, how all her examples are in fact film creations, not real at all.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

I do agree that mocking masculine archetypes and reducing males to objects of lust is just as wrong as doing it to females but I certainly think she is missing the point. For one thing there is nothing wrong with sexual attention if the person drawing the attention is okay with it. I personally because males and females should move towards a well balanced gender mindset that includes the best of both sides.

I get so sick of articles like this.  I don't know what world these people are living in.

I read a lot about it
Dr.Leonard Sax and a lot of other scientist, doctors and people in general are debunking that 70's idea of the Unisex human

Personally, and I will get comments on it, I think MOST people are really male or female

The thing I dont like is the minority is being neglected...I dont feel part of the masculine heterosexual male community...its just, I cant fathom being one of them, I like to feel exactly how I feel and thats being a fruitcake

I think those are good values actually

Its more the the underpresentation and scores of boys in the education system, the lower and less testosterone levels ( hinted its an evnvironmental thing) and the lack of motivation. Also Coed- education seems to do the majority of the boys their head in

And ofcourse there is the case of hatred against feminine boys and their higher depression and suicidal levels. I know that since I experienced it myself and went through those stages aswell..which at that time I couldnt place; got bullied a lot but I had no idea why

Im not from America, but I guess it applies here in Holland aswell

Just my opinion and I know someone will get butt hurt over this, but I don't see the lowering of testosterone in males as a problem.  It is proven to cause rage and violence.   There is a reason why male penitentiary systems are far more overpopulated than female ones and in my opinion the problem starts with to much masculinity.

The real men / masculinity / testosterone issue is a standard that is often applied that doesn't really add up to anything.  There are many "masculine" behaviors and characteristics, some of which are good, some of which are bad, and some of which are neutral/mixed.  There are many "feminine" behaviors and characteristics, some of which are good, some of which are bad, and some of which are neutral/mixed.  The point isn't to go nuts with femininity or masculinity, but to be a good person in their own way.  A "real woman" or a "real man" is not made by embodying gender stereotypes but by doing what is right and what is right for themselves.

If someone is really having trouble finding a "masculine" man, there are plenty one can find at frat parties and bars.

If the idea of a "real man" is anything like that of the over masculine icons like John Wayne, then thanks but no thanks.  You can keep them.

Take them my dear.   ;D  While it is cute when they flirt with me and rather fun to see their reaction when I walk away arm in arm with my wife, I'm just not interested in them.

There's plenty of "real men" out there, they're just married.. to each other.. ;)

What is a man? Nothing more than a miserable little pile a secrets, a cesspit of hatred and lies; or at least most men are.

Wow!!! And I thought I was the boards official  feminazi.  You got me beat.
I like some men, just not in my bed.

Personally it seems to me that a lot of the hatred and anger here towards men and masculinity is really those individual's hatred towards that part in themselves.

The idea that they too might have a masculine side or needs as most people do, might remind them of their own struggles with having their feminine side accepted.

And so, they push any masculinity in them as far away as possible so as to never be reminded of it again, even though it is perfectly ok to be a girl and have a masculine side.

The same could be said for those who feel masculinity is being threatened.  Treating it like this delicate rose in a glass jar, "don't touch, don't touch".  It's all very elementery school cootie gender wars.

If masculinity is just about not sharing your feelings when you're hurt, then it's a negative thing.  If your masculinity is threatened by crying, then you don't have real masculinity.

Sarah

Except that I'm a woman and feel that masculinity is being threatened.
I have no personal stake in it.
Neither does my Spouse who is also a woman and feels the same.
We don't need to be masculine to have some compassion for those who are.
