Can somebody clue me in why 40+ (and much older!) men wear mid-calf length white crew socks with shorts and sneakers???

I can NOT do that!! It's so dorky!!

I look around and most men do wear those cushion crews when dressed down.

Curious.  Maybe somebody can clue me in?  I mean, I really want to blend in as a guy, but really, c'mon.  Dorky socks??!

Naw, you don't have to adopt dorky fashion to be a guy. Um, but I have to confess, I've made that fashion error. Well, not sure if my socks are mid-calf, they're longer than ankle socks though, which always look feminine to me. They're just regular white tube socks. I thought it was just sandals you couldn't wear socks with (in fact, my girlfriend told me she'd leave me if I did that, so I answered the door one day in shorts, black socks, and sandals).

What I want to know is why older guys wear their shorts pulled up so the waistband is just under their pecs and they have a male camel-toe. Yech.

No, Jay. You don't have to wear socks with your shoes when you're in shorts, even if you're a guy and are middle-aged. You're correct, way too dorky!

Dennis, I think the answer to that question mey be best discovered by looking at the pot-belly the shorts may have to be drawn across in order to stay up!!

Otherwise, I think you two guys have asked a question that is kinda about life, the universe and everything!!

A huge part of being a guy - to at least some degree - is an open contempt of fashion.  Bad haircuts, dorky sox, dumb shoes, plaid shorts, the list is nearly endless.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

Dont worry about Socks to much Jay,

They will all get eaten by the Sock Monster when they (eventually after being removed from floor / under bed) end up in the washing basket.

My ex had a habit of putting only one sock back from pairs after washing, no idea where they used to go.

At one stage I had more odd socks than actual pairs.

On big plea.... NEVER WEAR SOCKS WITH SANDALS!

Well, I've decided to steal the sock ideas from our youth, namely my 9.5 yr old cooler-than-cool skater dude, and a 20-something smart hip guy at work: They both wear ankle socks, the kind where an inch or so of sock sticks up above the shoe.  I was in Home Depot the other day where I saw the dorky mid-calf crew sock in abundance; and that's the way my ex-h wore (wears) his socks.

Maybe I'll pass better if I conform to the sock standard.  Or maybe not...

trust me, it wont help you pass better.  just go wih the ankle socks.  it will make you seem a little bit younger because usually its the older gents who do that.  plus they look retarded IMO.

Guys don't wear mid calf socks in my country (unless they are school kids in uniform). It's unnatural!  :icon_shakefist:

No I lie, my father in law wears them but then he plays golf. You have to look dorky to play golf...

So today I'm out shopping.  Cool Nike skate shoes, ankle socks, olive green shorts, beer tee shirt, new buzz cut with gray at the temples.

I'm looking at bug spray to take camping, and these two little boys (maybe 3?) were not really paying attention to where they were going.  I didn't mind, I have kids.

Then the mother says:  "Watch where you're going boys, the lady is looking at stuff."

ARGH!!

Probably a good thing I didn't use the men's room.  Or maybe when I whip it out...nah, I'll probably get beat up.

Are these the dorky socks? Cause these are what I wear.

Yes, Dennis, that's what I was referring to.  :o  though yours are pushed down some, not stretched up toward your knees!

Though you don't look dorky in that pic.  I wish I had pics of my ex on this computer for an example.  He's a true dork!

Maybe it's a white sneaker thing.  I don't currently own white sneakers.

Jay, Dennis, you guys both look awesome. Wear any kind of socks you want.

Personally I don't get the appeal of ankle socks, I live in a northern climate, and if my ankles/legs are cold... then the feet will get cold too.

Hello, Jay,

Mid-calf white crew socks with shorts and sneakers are dorky, for shore.  Short socks, like anklets, are, IMHO, OK with sneakers.

Socks with sandals are gauche to say the least.  I would not be buried like that if I was you.

Also be careful to leave the white sport shirt, lime green slacks, white belt and white leather shoes to those who believe that doctors dress like that.

When I was in the military my daily work uniform was dungarees and a chambray shirt.  I became very accustomed to denims and chambrays after four years of them.  After I got out they remained my "play clothes," adapted for the seasons.

I wore Sperry Topsiders or other leather deck shoes, without socks until December.

Hope this helps, Jay.

That's the shed that came with the house.  Now visible as the trees hiding it got chopped down.  I'll have to tell my brother to cut a moon in the door.  Or maybe i'll paint one on, LOL.

Dennis, that's the way to wear socks :-), perfect length.

You should only wear high on the calf socks if you've got major calves
(like a soccer player), they accentuate them at make you look badass.
Usually if you've got big calves you've also have big muscular thighs,
so the tall socks don't look so out of place.

Most men in their 40's have scranny legs and those high socks make
them look like high school girls in their school uniforms (they look cute on those
girls though :-),
or grade school boys of 8-9 in their school uniforms  :D.

What's wrong with plaid shorts?? *looks down at his plaid shorts*
And I'm not sure if I would agree that it's "contempt" but maybe just being unaware. For example, I never think about matching clothes or any of that and my mom and girlfriend have a running joke together about my camo shorts with plaid shirts. How is that not matching?  ???
