Thai School Introduces Transgender Bathroom

A secondary school in northeastern Thailand, the Kampang School, has designed a new bathroom for transgender people.

The "transvestite toilet," designated by a human figure that's half man (in blue) and half woman (in red), has been in use since classes started in May.

this is an absolute outrage and i MUST protest. re-segregation of America again is coming if they continue to do this crap over there. but it won't be skinned based, it'll be gender based.

Um, you do realize that it's already like this right? There are plenty of things already segregated by gender,  restrooms are already one of them. I'm sure you've seen the male and female restrooms, yes?

If you were stealth, or even if your weren't, you wouldn't have to use transgender toilets.  Unless theres gonna be a load of toilet police checking everyone!

But I agree with you.  The idea of transgender toilets is abhorent. They're not  for the benefit of transgender people, just transphobic people.
Women use women's toilets and men use men's, why is that so hard for people to get?

Edited because i was wrong

Those who are in stealth surely aren't going to be differentiated from their cisgendered counterparts, so as far as anyone else is concerned they're 'normal' men or 'normal' women so are free to use the mens and womens bathrooms.  Non-passing CDs/TGs/TSs/etc and deliberately non-binary presenting people are outed by their very nature anyway.  It's not like a male crossdresser can use the mens and be inconspicuous!

For those of us who're not men or women it'd be nice to be able to not inappropriately gender ourselves in the eyes of other people when we walk past a door saying "men" or "women" in order to do such a simple thing as pee.

Thailand is a different culture to ours.  There, trans[whatever] is largely considered a kind of 'third gender' with binary identified FT 'crossgender' living people somewhat marginalised.  In the west the reverse is true, where trans (at least in terms of legal rights and recognition) equals binary transsexual only and the rest of us seemingly don't exist.

I'm sorry, I really should think before i open my mouth (or type for that matter).  I mean binary-identified transgender people should be able use the toilet of their identified gender, without having to deal with bigots.

I'm forgetting non-binary transgender people though, sorry, I was insensitive.  Maybe then transgender toilets are a good thing, and I suppose they'd make transition easier for TS's as well.
Just as long as binary-identified transsexuals aren't expected to use them, even if they don't pass.

This point here makes the case very well for the fact that gendered restrooms are a fairly silly idea overall. Why would it make transition easier if you weren't expected to use it to begin with. If there were nothing but single stall lockable 'unisex' restrooms none of this would even be an issue to begin with.

I was browsing "Pravda" this morning to catch up with their take on Russia's wonderful win over Sweden in the European Cup (soccer !), and came up with a more detailed account of the same story ....

http://english.pravda.ru/news/society/18-06-2008/105531-transvestite-0#

Its a real sympathetic take, and puts it into much better perspective.

When you have 5 - 10 % of school and university students identifying as "trans-gender", maybe katoey, but not "stealth", nor neccessarily ts, then its a progressive move to allocate toilets, dorms, so as not to embarrass them or their fellow women students, or put them under threat from forcing them into using male facilities ?

Well done Thailand !

And cheers to Pravda too for their positive pro gay / trans reporting (nice story of theirs on Californian gay marriage too) ....
