In almost all of the North American Indian tribes there were those who were thought to have the combined spirits of the male and female gender. Berdaches, as they were later called, actually served several roles and were revered for the wisdom and compassion in matters of the heart and spirit. They would most often serve as matchmakers and marriage counselors or work as "medicine men" in their respective tribes.
