I'm going to take online classes this year. Just basic core classes.
I just graduated high school.

I know I'm changing my name. Some point in the next few months.
My mom brought up an idea..
If I know I'm changing my name shouldn't I be able to register with the name I'm changing it to or should I just wait?

Also...don't you run into a lot of problems when your name is clearly male but it says "F" on your ID?

I went to the airport and they made me go through special security because my name was female but I looked male..
What'll they do when it's a males name but the sex says female?

I'm seriously stressing out.
I'm sick of having to worry about this and when people are like wait a minute...they make it a big deal so everyone around knows what's going on.
and the name change has to be put in the newspaper for I don't know how long for the whole town to know.
I don't understand that...

Sorry. Stressful moment.

Chill my man.

The only thing I see a problem with registering without having your name change is, if they go back to get your transcripts from High School, there may be a mix up. Unless they don't need them, I don't see the problem in registering as your desired name, as long as you know that's the one you want, and are going to change it too in the next couple months.

I had my name changed when I was 16, and could have the F changed to a M now that I'm in Cali, and will do so shortly, I'm just lazy. So I've always had that dreaded EFFFFFFFF on my id. I've gotten weird glances, and even a couple people say "Man the dmv messed up my cousins id like this too, they suck!" ha! It happens. A buddy of mine when he was 18 and got his first ID, they actually put a F on it, he kept it for years, who cares? People are too nervous, weirded out, confused, etc to even ask anything..don't stress it. And if someone DOES ask, just simply tell them, the DMV sucks ;)

As far as the name change in the paper, I can honestly say I read the paper every morning and have never even noticed that section to this day. And I'm sure majority of other people don't either. Don't stress yourself out bro!

Are the requirements for changing the f to an m in Cali less strict?

Do you have to live there a certain length of time to get it changed there?

anything in Cali seems to be "less strict" than anywhere else lol. I'm pretty sure the only "requirement" is for a therapist to sign the actual documentation you need, which is quite easy. Are you in Cali?

College IDs tend to have names, but you can change them if/when you change your legal name. Let the school's administration know. Most college IDs I've seen do not have gender on it. When I registered for Santa Rosa Junior College, my gender was not required for registration. My name was, however, so it does say a girl's name on my ID. But they never even look at it. They ask for my driver's license more than anything. I only use my ID to check out books at the library.

Relax. IDs are NEVER permanent. People get married and change their names legally all the time. They'll treat your name change the same way.

Not too sure about NY's law's about it, but I wouldn't assume it'd be too hard to change it? I'd say call the DMV or social security office and ask what their requirements are to change the gender marker on your ID. I moved to Cali for the same reasons, and was lucky enough to get free health care, T, medical insurance etc just for being a "resident". If you need a place to crash to get it taken care of, all I ask is chip in on beer and groceries :)
