More people probably remember the Matthew Shepard case than the
Brandon Teena case. Beaten and left to die tied to a fence near
Laramie, Shepard's case got national attention. His funeral became an
unwilling showcase for the idiocies of Fred Phelps and his fellow
morons, who picketed with signs that said "God Hates ->-bleeped-<-s" and
"Matthew Burning in Hell." A high-profile film version of the
off-Broadway Play, The Laramie Project, with such stars as Laura
Linney, Peter Fonda, and Camryn Manheim, called attention to the case
again in 2002.
