The American Psychological Association urged psychologists on Sunday to take a leading role in ending discrimination based on gender identity but stopped short of taking a position with respect to the diagnosis of gender identity disorder (GID) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual due to be published in 2012.
