SPECIALAlabama native Laverne Cox proudly struts her Birmingham ties on her Web site. In a section called "Recount," she mentions attending high school at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Cox started as a creative-writing major and later switched to the dance program. "I was immersed in the arts there, and it's a privilege I carry with me to this day," she says.
The Mobile-born actress and dancer, who declines to reveal her age, is an experienced pro when it comes to auditions, rehearsals and emoting in front of the cameras.

Her sassy self-confidence and a flamboyant, somewhat flippant personality have served Cox well so far, helping her to overcome obstacles, stay focused and maintain her drive to succeed.
