... if the presidential candidate for which you voted won the election and then announced he is MTF and will be transitioning while in office?  Would he be impeached?  Should he?

This is a fascinating topic. I'd say I wouldn't be mad, but I'd worry a bit. Transition is a stressful process for many (most?), and requires a lot of time and energy. I wouldn't mind a trans president, but I would expect said president to keep a very close eye on her stress level and whether or not she can remain fully invested in her job through the often grueling (both physically and emotionally) process. I wouldn't want her to resign or be impeached, because she'd deserve a fair shot at the job from the start, as much as any other president has gotten. I think I would watch any president undergoing that amount of stress pretty closely (and her transition would inevitably be far more stressful than most, as it would be directly in the public eye/media circus at all times) and expect them to evaluate every now and then if they were fully dedicated to the office. As for whether she'd be impeached...unfortunately, I think the answer is a resounding yes. America is just not open-minded enough yet.

I'd say that candidate is likely to be totally insane and should be impeached on the basis of instability and inability to hold down the job in an effective manner. :) And at over 35 they would be a fetishist anyhow and that would obviously make them unfit for holding the office. Ipso facto

Why?

I would be amazed and very interested in their term in office.

QuoteWould he be impeached?  Should he?

Would he?  Most likely because of transphobia in the voting public.  Should he? Absolutely not!  That would be out and out discrimination.

Would I be mad, no.  Should she step down, yes.  Would she be impeached?  I think she would be given the opportunity to step down gracefully, knowing that the threat of a swift impeachment and removal from office was quite real.

If she didn't step down, should she be impeached?  I don't think she could be because no laws were broken.

Would Congress or the Cabinet remove her from office anyway?  Absolutely.  They would do it under the guise of mental impairment.

The presidency is incredibly stressful - stressful enough to where the healthiest president ages far more than the 8 years s/he is in office.

As others have said, and as we all know, transitioning is stressful.

The two stresses and incompatable.  One stress deals with the outside world.  The other stress deals with the inner turmoil.  I am not convinced that the two stresses are compatible.  If the stress level didn't kill her, the probability of making irrational decisions is elevated.  After all, you are going through puberty a second time.

Puberty and controlling the world's largest nuclear arsenal don't seem that compitable to me.

Besides, the public and Congress would wonder what ELSE is she hiding from us?  THat would make a transitioning president unable to lead.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I'd be ecstatic.

Would she be impeached?
Absolutely, far too easy a target.

Should she?

No, and I think answering yes to this question undermines the position of any Transsexual trying to argue that their condition has no bearing on their ability to perform their job. Also consider that the President would have a different set of transition stress causes than most - she would primarily be under the stress of media scrutiny and personal attacks from political enemies. She would not however be suffering from financial uncertainty (presuming she has come out and is not out of a job), presumably stress over personal relationships would be equal to the rest of us and she would be receiving the best treatment/therapy and advice available. I'm not saying it wouldn't be harder for her, but there's still a trade off.

As far as personal attacks go there's only so far her enemies could get with the same old deviant fetishist-satanic-pedophile style accusations that would be the most obvious choice of action before people start smelling bullsh*t, and after that what can they do?

It's all hypothetical of course, seeing as there's no way in hell she would be allowed to stay in office...but wouldn't it be cool?

By the way I'm Australian and we're not a republic so please consider my opinion invalid.

Obama would be a lovely woman. And um... his -ahem- her transition would really interfere with her work.

While wouldn't mind if they already had transitioned before becoming president I agree that the stress of transitioning would drag her attention to much away from what she needs to do for the country.  But I do not doubt if the human race survives long enough that eventually there will be a transsexual there.  May be a long time though
Every day we pass people, do we see them or the mask they wear?
If you live under a mask long enough, does it eventually break or wear down?  Does it become part you?  Maybe alone, they are truly themselves?  Or maybe they have forgotten or buried themselves so long, they forget they are not a mask?

Aiden wrote my exact words. If they had completed transition, fine. But transitioning is too much of a distraction for a 24/7 job, that is one of the most powerful in the world.

If the President were to undergo a divorce during the presidency should they step down or be impeached? That's one of life's great stresses. Or if their spouse were to die? If not, why the stress of transitioning only?

I can't believe some have said they should go because they can't hold down the job (or words to that effect). Talk about shooting transexual rights in the foot.

Each person deals with their transition in their own way, some are good at coping with stress and some are not. Some are very, very good at not only holding down their job but doing it very well. Come on people give us a break.

Sorry for the rant.

My problem is that you are supposed to know who you are putting into the office. In this case you wouldn't.

Would I vote for a TS, yes. Would I be happy if I were tricked into it, no.

Rhye

They'd be impeached without a doubt.

I'm not shooting anyone in the foot.  I'm just not letting my compassion override my common sense (least not this time lol)  How can you know how they will take transitioning and how it will effect their job.   Who's taking care of the country while she's in surgery?  Being a president is probably one of the most stressful jobs in country, you have to be able to deal with the press, making life and death decisions, and there's no end to the focus they have to put towards the country.  We go home and we rest, but any moment they are going be on call.  Making decisions that effect others.  If a cigendered president can't do everything they claim and get distracted from their duties, how you think someone who's attention is distracted by transitioning going to perform?  I have nothing against a transsexual being president.  But they need to have their life settled as best as possible before taking on the lives of billions in the country.
