When Governor Deval Patrick started his address to the Democratic National Convention Aug. 26 with a reference to his daughter Katherine, many LGBT viewers probably anticipated that he was about to mention that she recently came out as gay. He did not. Instead, Patrick used his 18-year-old daughter's experience of life in general - having her own room, having traveled to four continents, and having personally met a president of the United States - to illustrate much better his family's well-being is today compared to a generation ago.
