Do they specifically require the reproductive organ surgery?  They probably wouldn't change it with just the chest operation right?
Health insurance too right? (does it matter at all to the health insurance companies what your license gender says, therapist letter or do they need the surgery letter too[whichever surgery is required]) ???
I know every insurance company is different but from anyone's knowledge of dealing with this would be helpful [ I'm on medicaid ]

Depending on the surgeon and the letter he/she writes, all it takes is top surgery in most places and a well-worded letter.  That goes for the passport people, too.

Actually, I changed my gender with Social Security just with the chest operation. What I had to do first was get a court-ordered gender change from the county. For that, I used a letter from my surgeon that said I'd had gender reassignment surgery. Then I had to change my birth certificate with that court order. Finally, I brought the birth certificate to Social Security (they let you mail it in, too, BTW) and got it changed. Whew!

So I guess you should call up your nearest county courthouse and ask them what's needed to get a court-ordered gender change. Most likely a surgery letter (it doesn't have to say the type of surgery - most don't) and then you can go from there.

It depends on the wording.  There are a few must-haves for this letter...

1. The phrase "... has completed sexual reassignment surgery" must be in it.

2. The doctor must state "under pains and penalties of perjury"

a court order may also be necessary.

But there is no one surgery for this- a good lady friend of mine got hers with FFS.  If OP would like, I will gladly share the full text of my letter with personal bits omitted.

yeah good thing is it doesn't specify... so as long as you get a friendly surgeon you should be good.

Hey, thanks for the answers.

I just received my letter and I wanted to know if it will work it says-

"The above captioned patient underwent gender reassignment surgery on 6/26/08 at the Delaware [long hospital name] center. He is on male hormones presenting full-time as a male, and now requests to have his records changed to reflect his new gender.

Don't hesitate to contact me directly if any assistance to this matter is needed"

That's it. It doesn't say the words completed or anything it's very general...
I guess I should go try at least
