When introducing yourself, do you state your first and last names or only your first name? I ask because my wife made an interesting comment the other day. We were discussing the differences between men and women. This question came up and her answer was that generally, women do not state their last name when introducing themselves.

What about you?

As a teen i went to the bad kids' boarding school and they encouraged us not to use our last names. In a professional context I will use my last name, but not in a social.

I tend to do a reverse Bond.

Because I offer my first name,

"My name's James."

And I got this look that says,, 'and?' so I have to put in,

"James Bond."

'cept my name is Adam.

Now, first name only.  In professional setting, 'Miss. O'Brien'.

In my past life First and Last.  I think that most men do because it is power thing.  I think alot of women do it in a male dominated arena.

Informal: first name only. Sometimes first and middle. I only use the last name if I need to point out a relationship with my wife.

Professional: first and last.

Usually both.

In business, it is expected. In social, I would only use my first name except that so many people I meet know OF me before meeting me - my reputation precedes me ;) Oh the price of fame!  ::)

I only ever use my first name. Even at work, when I introduce myslef to clients it always "Hi I'm Alex from ABC Computers" with a firm handshake. I dont see the need for them to know my last name. If someone asked Alex who? I'ld tell them then, lol

Socially its Lee but at work I offer my last name. If asked socially what is my surname then I will say Johnston.. But not unless asked.

My work is a first name only deal, I tell people my last name about once a year, if that.

I got to introduce myself as Jonathan for the first time yesterday and it rocked!!  First name only as it was an informal setting.

As far as work I'm not out so I don't use my now new legal name there, but I have noticed in my client dealings that nearlly 100% want to shake my hand, whereas before maybe less than 10% did.  Male presentation, maybe?  I dunno.

That and my immediate boss has always been an arse and every morning meeting he likes to shred his underlings to prove his superiority.  Thing is, the guy is smart, and yes I would love to learn from him.  It's just his attitude that "I'm God, You're Stupid" that sucks.  But I have noticed that he does not pick on me any more, and if he questions my judgment he accepts my answer and doesn't rip me a new one.  Not sure why.  I'm not out; maybe it's my dude presentation.  Or maybe I freak him out.  Who knows.
